I recently moved out of the dorm...and can't take this slow thingy....I even forgot the name of the device. It's been a such a long time since I used it.

How do I set up LAN using DSL connection?

I'm thinking DSL to one computer and that computer is the server and other comps connect to it. If I'm thinking right....How do I do that???

Thanks in advance for you help!!!!

Two options:

1. You buy an Internet Router/Switcher (like the SMC Barricade). You connect the DSL to the Router Wan, you connect up to four computers to the Barricade 4 Switched ports. You set the computers to automatic DHCP net connection.

Under such configuration, any computer on the network connects to the internet on its own, the others can be off.

In 20 minutes you will have DSL network running, it will cost about $100-$120 for a Router. Probability of success 100%

2. You install a Second nic in the computer that is already connected to the DSL, you connect the second nic to a Hub, you connect the other computers to the hub.

The main computer must be ON regardless of what computer is used at the time.

You Install Internet connection software, and configure the whole system.

Cost one nic $10- $15, one 4 port Hub 10MB $20 100MB $40.

A lot of people tried the second method probability of success unknown, it is hard to configure, and some time it plain does not work. However if you have the parts you can try (you lose only time).

What kinds of DSL router is it?? Routers like Caymen and Netopia have several connections for multiple PC's, I assume 1 IP address? You will need to configure your router for NAT, unless you want to use a PC for a proxy server, if you have a DSL modem, your going to need to run NAT on your PC or some proxy software, check out www.nat32.com, great stuff.

I need help with that too. I'm planning on getting DSL soon. If I had computers networked together would i just connect the hub to a router and the computers to the hub? sorry for the repetitive questions...but i dont understand.

There are many ways to network in the home but the two most common ways that I know of are:
1)If your using Windows you can use Internet Connect Sharing(It's a program that comes with your
Windows cd){>control panel > add/remove programs > Windows setup > Internet Tools}
You can also find info on it in the Help files
a)First you need to connect two nic cards to the computer that is going to be the main computer
connected to the internet. One nic card is connected to the cable modem and the other nic is
connected to a hub (the other computers in your network also need nic cards and connected
to the hub)
b)You need to add Internet Connect Sharing
c)Go into Network properties (rt click network neighborhood or control panel)
Under the config. tab find the tcp/ip binding for both of the nic cards
1)the nic(ethernet) card that is connected to cable modem should be set to use DHCP.
2)the nic card that is connected to the LAN should use the ip address 192.168.0.1
with subnet mask 255.255.255.0
d)All other computers on the network can use the (Obtain ip address automatically) option in
their tcp/ip binding

2)You can buy a dsl/router ($100-$200). Connect the cable modem and all the other computers to
dsl/router through their nic cards.
Different dsl/router have different ways of configuring the LAN and internet connection so
follow the instructions in the manual.

**Internet Connection Sharing is a cheap and easy way to setup multiple computers to the internet
however you don't get firewall protection and connections can be a bit slower.
**Dsl/router gives you both limited firewall protection as well as better network traffic
management
