Trying to: share internet on network
Connection: DSL through Verizon
Using: Router/computer uses Win2K Pro; others using Win2KPro and 2K Server
Problem: all computers are visible and talking but the internet connection is not being shared

Tried to setup internet connection through router computer but does not work...seems that I need to setup Internet Explorer as a "Shared Service" but it is not in the list. I added it under port 80.

Any suggestions for this rambling nonsense? Tips for setting up Internet Connection Sharing?

Thanks

I dunno exactly how to do it in Win2k, but IE doesn't need to be configured in anyway. Here's a basic(aka: not specific) how to:

1 the system that will be the server has to run ICS(Internet Connection Service). In Win98SE, after setting the server a floppy disk is required which contains files that need to be run on the other systems. WinXP doesn't require these files, I suspect that Win2k is similar to WinXP.

2 In Win98, run the files on the floppy(see point 1) on the Clients. In WinXP, run the Internet Connection Wizard on the Clients and tell them to use the LAN for Internet.

3 Win98 requires a reboot, and if you're lucky the Internet will be shared(I've cursed plenty of times getting it to work :) ). WinXP might require a reboot(can't remember), but just fire up your browser and start surfin'.

If you want more specific details, run Win2k's Help, Windows has a decent Help system.

Have you tried running the "Wizard" to set up a shared internet connection? It should do it automatically for you.

just because the machines are visible and talking on the Windows network doesn't mean that TCP/IP works on them... you've got to set IP addresses for each machine. Make the router: 192.168.0.1, subnet 255.255.255.0. (this is important, do this for the network adapter that connects to your network, not to the DSL modem. The interface to the DSL modem shouuld have DHCP set.).

Make every other machine have IPs like 192.168.0.X, where X is from 2 to 255. Subnet is still 255.255.255.0. All of the other machines should have 192.168.0.1 set up as their 'gateway'. And you'll also probably have to find the IP for your ISP's DNS server(s), and include those under DNS for each of the client computers.
