Yes, you can run an FTP server on any IP number, be it dynamic or static. The key is that your clients know what the IP is.

In my experience and my opinion (and thousands of others), IIS FTP is a joke. Yes it has basic FTP functionality, but lacks the features and security that other 3rd party FTP server's possess.

Try Serv-U FTP Server and you will be more than happy.

There are other good ones out there, but I recommend Serv-U.

Good luck!

Two votes for Serv-U.

How often does your ISP change your IP number?

I too have dynamic IP and use DNS2Go. You just need to run a client on one of your machines which updates the DNS2Go servers when your IP changes. It works great and its free.

I must also advise you not to use IIS.... serv-U is pretty good, I like to use War FTP Daemon which is totally free and packed with great features.

Whats would one do if their IP changes, but the ip is assigned to the router? Does DNS2GO or anything else have the ability to help in this situation?

I use a router and have a dynamic IP and I also use dns2go, so having a router is no problem.

I also agree that IIS's ftp isn't that great and not as easy and configurable compared to warftp and serv-u. I've tried many FTP software and war and serv are my two top picks. While I do like the ton of options warftp has, I prefer serv-u because of it's on going support (I know war is not dead but it sure has been in active) and has some really nice features, also for the novice I think serv-u is easier to setup.
