Sup guys, I have a quick question.

I am planning on getting a dvd burner most likely it will be the Plextor 716-SA Which is the dual sided 16x dvd burner with SATA hookup. I am currently using an asus a8n-sli motherboard which has 8 sata slots, However! I am using all four of the SATA 1-4 slots for my hardrives which are all of course SATA. Now all i have left are the 4 RAID slots. Basically whats the foolproof way of hooking all 5 devices up together in order for them to live together in peace and harmony. I do not want to compromise the data on my hardrives nor do I want to lose efficency by getting an IDE dvd burner.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Side notes I am running windows XP sp2

THANKS!

Why do you think getting a PATA drive will decrease efficiency? The SATA interface has a higher maximum bandwidth allowing for future growth potential..but current drives can not use that full bandwidth..the drives use the same technology, it's only the interface that is different, so you aren't going to gain any speed by using all SATA..

I have four hard drives on the nVidia SATA ports and a Plextor 716SA on the Silicon Image controller. Everything plays happily together.

Just for your info, all 8 ports are raid capable.

What I reckon you should do (my 2 cents lol), is raid0 the 4 sata drives if they are all the same, on the nvidia controller cause that would be some stonking performance! And stick the Plextor on the silicon image controller, obviously not in raid, and you'll be fine.

Only RAID all the drives if they are of the same capacity and manufacturer.

One thing I found is that I could not have my two Raptors on ports 1 & 2 in RAID0 and then have the Plextor on port 3 or 4, one reason why I moved it to the SI ports (before I had four hard drives). A newer BIOS may have fixed this but I never got around to testing.

Seems a few peple have had this problem. Linky including myself.

I did try ver 1006 of BIOS and it has the same problem.
Just put the plextor on the SI controller. seems to work fine.
