Setting up an internet machine for my kid...need some suggestions

My daughter(9) has been begging me all year to hook up her computer to the web. I'd like to find an app that will let me use firefox with a whitelist of allowed websites so she can only go to the sites that I approve.
Any suggestions?
Also if anyone knows of any good(safe) internet portals for kids I'd be interested in hearing about them.

If the computer happens to be Vista Home Basic/Premium/Ultimate, another option is to use Parental Controls to whitelist sites that may be visited.

if you don't mind shareware, netnanny is a pretty good parental control software, and glubble as sam stated is one of the top-rated free parental control addons for firefox.

If you have a linksys router, you can install dd-wrt setup static DHCP for her computer and filter it at the router. A lot harder to work around that way.
