Setting up a wired/wireless network

I currently have a wired LAN setup at my house. I will be buying a new IBM Thinkpad with built in WI-FI and was wondering if someone out there could recommend a router or switch that I could use with both this laptop and the wired system that I already have. I don't have a high speed internet access, so all i need is a way to hook up wired and wireless computers on the same LAN. Thanks for the help.

I don't own one of these buy my buddy does and he loves his. I own the BEFSR41 (no wireless) and have had zero problems:

Linksys BEFW11S4

Not too expensive... $143 at Newegg and looks like there is also a $15 rebate on it. Someone else here may have a better suggestion for you though.

If you already have a LAN, you probably have a Hub or a Switch.

First get the Laptop so you have a way the evaluate your setting.

To go wireless all you have to do is to buy a Wireless Access Point (WAP), and plug to your Hub/Switch.

Getting a WAP depends on the environment. I.e. The distance of the Laptop from the WAP, and what obstructions are in the way.

Entry level AP prices start at $60 and go up to $150. One of the tricks is to buy an inexpensive one at a Mega store. And see if it works. Does not work return.

For a moderate price the Linksys WAP11 is good deal.

I have that Linksys router that BeefcakeVA wrote about and it is great, I have 4 PCs hooked to it through my cable modem and I also access it with my laptop using a Linksys 802.11b card and all is well. Also right now you can get it for $129 after rebate.

do not get the linksys wireless router -

get the wireless access point -
cheaper, simpler set up - will do exactly what you want

plug the wireless access port into your existing LAN - bingo.
