setting up a webserver

Hey I'm thinking of setting up a webserver out of spare parts. This will be to host my site off of, maybe to act as a FTP dump and just for plain fun. The thing is, my ISP (cox cable) currently is running off a dynamic IP configuration. I don't know too much about networking and stuff, but I'm fairly sure this is gonna complicate things. I just want to know if it's feasible before I go and buy the few parts I'm gonna need to complete the server.

I'm probably gonna have it run some variant of Linux with Apache. It will be connected through a router.

Yeah that's perfect, thanks man. I knew about it taking a few days for the DNS to propagate (my main worry) so that's kind of a bummer, especially because my IP gets renewed every couple of days. Are there any solutions to this? Can I run a DNS server off the same box and have it update everything automatically? I don't really want to go to zoneEdit.com and update everything every other day.

It may take few day to propagate the Main IP that will be your Web Address, and will stay the same as long as your are with the DNS service.

The IP that is given to you by the ISP become secondary and it should be updated automatically within few minutes of change.

You can not run external Internet DNS of your Network unless you are a formal Internet registrar.

wha about DynDNS.org or the like? They have utilities too that constantly update their record of your IP.

Thats the way to go. Just keep in mind that cox will probably block port 80 and other key server ports and that running a server is most likely aginst your TOS but other than that have fun.
