Setting up a raid system

Hello...

In a few week I'll buy a new CPU and Motherboard, and I have decided that I want 2 harddrives which work together, so I will my data faster from the HD's.

A freind told me that it was a good idea to get a motherboard with a raid controller instead of running a software controller (or what it's called). The problem is, that I have no idea if this i right, or what motherboard to buy.

What motherboard du you guys think I should buy? I'm currently considering af P4, which set some limitdations on the motherboard choice. Therefore I'm specialy interesered in motherboard that have a raidcontroller and support the p4 CPU, but I'm open to all sugestions. Thanks

well i havent read too much on P4 mobo's but if you decide to get a thunder chicken then you should get the epox ep-8k7a+ sorry thats all the info i can give you

If you want a P4, the TH7-RAID would probably be a good choice. But remember, the current P4 will be dead-end in a few months, and you've got to get RDRAM, and a special HSF and PSU (read: expencive).

Get an Athlon. It'll be cheaper. the EPoX 8K7A+ is pretty nice.

he's right about not using a software raid solution, like whats in win2k's stripped volumes, but even the controllers that are on motherboards, are really software raid controllers, as they dont use their own cpu, .. if you really want raid, and are willing to spend the money on a good raid controller .. i assume you want raid0 .. check out the 3ware 6200, its around 120$ right now, i think .. you should check out http://www.storagereview.com , lots of info especially on raid, and raid controllers, good luck .. i havent been following the p4 boards much, but isnt the p4t still king? i have heard a few good things bout the th7 though .. well anyway good luck ..
