Im planning on setting up a website to sell products, im woundering what kinda software and hardware are involved and how to get it up and running. ive done alittle research about credit card systems and stuff, i just dont have the idea on how i should setup my database servers and web server. i need to know what i need to get and how to secure it. This is a project for school, i have no experience in setting up databases or other stuff. I want to know what is involved. Please list hardware and software i would need to get it all running.

Do you have to program your own store from scratch or can you go purchase a store system and use that? If you can purchase one, I'd check out http://www.candypress.com THey have a very inexpensive and yet FULLY customizable store that runs in ASP. Has supports for lots of payment options built in and you can add your own as well.

For a free solution, check out osCommerce, which is open source and very customizable. Server: anything recent will do for the traffic you will get on a school project. Software: windows with iis or apache OR linux/apache, whatever you are more comfortable with. You can use paypal as a credit card processor which is pretty cheap (won't cost anything just to sign up). 2checkout is also pretty good for low volume.
