Can't get the connection to work on his computer. Plugged everything and mine is working fine but his won't detect a connection. Anything I should do with Win98 SE to make it detect the connection?

Basics: device manager has it installed? Can you run ipconfig from a command prompt (yes I know Win98 has an applet for it). Are you sure your network stack is properly set up (I've seen more and more 98 boxes where TCP/IP isn't installed). Does your brother's computer have any firewall programs like NIS or ZoneAlarm?

Yes device manager has it installed. TCP/IP is installed. No, he has no firewall.

Just because you have TCP/IP installed, doesn't mean it works..

1st, ensure the latest drivers are updated for the network interface..
2nd, just to be safe, remove any protocols that you will not be using from windows networking (NWlink, Netbui, Appletalk, etc..) Windows 98 likes to install extra crap or install things different with every install..

Now you said in your topic, that you are setting up a network? Do you mean just a peer to peer, or are you accessing a network by router/access point?

with tcp/ip installed, go to the command prompt and run ipconfig... this should work, with tcp/ip installed..
try pinging LOCALHOST, or 127.0.0.1. this will test your protocol stack, and give you a good indication that tcp/ip is installed correctly..
If you are on a router, see if you can ping the gateway

Using a router to share my connection with my brother. TCP/IP seems to be installed properly.

just curious.. was this a new install of Windows 98? or has it been loaded all this time?
I guess make sure the windows 98 machine has the DHCP as its source of getting an ip address.. if that is how your router is setup..

It's a new install of Win98. Just formatted last night. Tried hooking the cable directly to the ethernet card and still doesn't seem to work so I guess I did something wrong there but I don't know what... The ethernet card's drivers seem properly installed.

start>run and type "winipcfg" (that's right, no "i" in "cfg"

change the dropdown to your ethernet and renew the IP

once you have an IP, run the IE setup wizard and setup normally. if the drivers are installed correctly, you should now be online

you can do it from the command line too..

ipconfig /release
This will release a DHCP acquired IP address and settings..

ipconfig /renew
This will renew the DHCP lease,..

I tried to renew and it said "DCHP server unavailable during renewal of the card". What does this mean?

do you have DHCP enabled in the router?
How does your other system get its IP address? Do you have it statically configured?

Check the cable that is connected to the Windows 98 computer..

did you try the Connection setup wizard on the 98 machine? I think you need to do this everytime you switch ISP's unlike XP !

How would I enable DHCP in the router? It didn't came with any software to install. It's the Linksys EZXS55W. Good? Bad?

Edit: The connection wizard didn't help ;_;

The link you have is to a switch, not a router. I believe XP is able to assign itself a working IP address in situations like this. Windows 98 on the other hand cannot. I believe you can set up Windows XP to act as a router which I think would work for you, but a better answer I'm sure will follow shortly.
