Setting up a LAN in Civ IV...

Okay, so I got this random urge that my buddy and I should hook up our rigs for some joint world-conquering. As familiar with software and hardware as I am, networking is completely unfamiliar to me. I'm running Vista 64 HP and he's running XP SP3. Can someone break down what we need to do to get our computers communicating and maybe even playing Civ IV together?

Router, hub, or switch and two cat-5 (big phone jack) cables, or one crossover cable, which looks like cat-5, except when you compare the ends the wires are in a different order on each end.

The last two comments were more what I was looking for. Thanks for the help, guys. We decided to just play over the internet and save the trouble of getting the LAN to work.
