Setting up a LAN connection

Im stuck. i tried to set up a LAN connection today between my laptop and a mates pc to play a few games online like starcraft etc.
when i plugged in the cable neither of the pcs picked it up, and no matter how many times we tried to set up the connection it wouldnt work.
im getting tired of trying now as it is annoying the hell out of me.
Any help or stuff please.

Some NICs are auto-switching. The one in my Dell D600 will take either straight or cross if I want to connect directly to someone, and it's some cheap Broadcom nonsense.
