Setting up a FTP server with a NAS drive?

I recently got myself a Bytecc LanDisk NAS enclosure + hard drive :)
It is connected to my network through a DLink DI-624 router.

The file server is up and running properly for local sharing (samba).

Now, how would I configure so that I can access it from another computer at a remote location? (using FTP)

The steps I've taken are:

1) setting up user accounts with the NAS drive and enabling FTP access
2) assigning a static IP for the NAS drive
3) setting up a 'virtual server' with the router to point external access to the NAS drive through port 21 and the static ip of the drive

Now, question is, how do I access the drive from outside?

I hope I've given enough info so as to not get a one of those "vague questions get vague answers" responses :p

Thanks!

open up a command prompt and try to connect via ftp would be the next logical step

Alos, can you connect to the NAS via FTP internally? If you can't, then you need to resolve that first. If you can but can't do it externally, then you need to check your routing..

Also, does it have built in FTP capability? I am not that familiar with Samba.

The NAS has both Samba and FTP functionality.

I guess my question is, how do I locate it from a remote location?

(jackMDS: thanks for the link!)
