From alt.sci.seti this afternoon :( :

Subject: OUTAGE: BAD NEWS
Date: Fri, 2 Mar 2001 14:42:48 -0800
From: Michael Sinatra <michael@rancid.berkeley.edu>
Organization: University of California at Berkeley
Newsgroups: alt.sci.seti, sci.astro.seti

The fiber pull has been completed and the final step is to splice the new fiber back into the main LBL-UCB bundle.

Unfortunately...

Due to the rains in the Bay Area yesterday and this morning, when the contractor tried to access the site where the splice needs to be made, their trucks (including 4x4s) became stuck. They have been unable to reach the location.

It gets wackier: tomorrow, they're going to rent ATVs so they can get to the site. Of course, that means we won't be back until tomorrow.

More info as I get it. We'll be updating the web page soon...

michael

This is the guy from the UC Berkeley's networking staff. They haven't updated their web page with this info yet...

Another day folks... :(

Congrats on your Golden-hood Curt!!! :D

And Assim1, I still have about 12 WUs left in my Setiqueue (enough for a couple more days for 2 of my machines), but my dual Xeon that uses Setidriver for itself will be out of WUs tomorrow... :(

But I have at least 2 more directories of older versions of Setidriver with at least 10-20 cached WUs in each to switch it over to if necessary (and I think I'm gonna have to use them AND make sure they crunch with the 3.03 client too)! ;)

Phiton: Keep trying Orange Kid - his goes up and down and he has a 10 user limit, so keep trying. You might PM him if you try and try and can't succeed.

Poof, why can't you have your dual Xeon go through Orange Kid's?

For anyone that needs it, the info for Orange Kid's server is

orangekid.teamanandtech.com:5001

As of 8:30 p.m. EST his queue is up and running.

Oh, for anyone who is running out of WU's and doesn't want to set up a new account at Orange Kid's, you can use my account. ;) themjd@aol.com is the e-mail addy. On Orange Kid's my account has 38 WU's queued, I AFAIK I won't be using any of them because I have 5 WU queued on my machine, and it does less than 2 WU/day. :)

Oops, I forgot I do have a few other machines connecting to Orange Kid's, but they only do a few WU a day, so just leave me 10 WU or so. :)

You know folks, S@H members in particular, this is a perfect chance to help out one of the other Distributed type projects that Team Anandtech is involved in! :D Granted, it might only be for a single day or two, but if you don't have any Seti WUs to process anyway, why not help another project with the otherwise idle time?!? :Q I know the other parts of our Team would greatly appreciate it, and you know that we're a very helpful bunch in getting people started and set up, so why not check out another project temporarily? ;)

Sukhoi - I think I need to get rid of all these extra WUs that I have laying around in a million SetiDriver directories that I've setup over the past 8 months... ;)

This is a good excuse to do just that!

What's funny is that before the switchover to 3.03, I had my Setiqueue set for 55 WUs and I recently dropped it down to ~30 due to the slower times and less machines I had using it. And even with that, it was about 10 days worth, which I thought was still a bit excessive, but I guess not anymore... :p

I can always point the Xeon back to itself to get WUs from the same Setiqueue that is running on it... :)

I also have a bunch of VLAR WUs that I've saved and I can run those on the one machine that I currently run the CLI in WINE on and that also points to the queue. I'll just run the straight Linux client on it.

I think I have enough archived WUs to take me well into next week... It would just take a little work to shift stuff around to get to them... :)

[EDIT: Oh and networkman - I'm a 5-project woman!!! :Q ;)]

networkman has a great idea! I was a bit reluctant to mention it as you might like it! :):D If you do try another project like RC5-64, be sure to keep your fetch threshold small as you need to be sure and complete the blocks you fetch. On our TeAm site (www.teamanandtech.com) there is a speed page that will tell you how many block or work units you system can do on the various DC project. Us that number to "tune" you fetch request.

If you do a project that flushes to the TeAm proxey (see FAQs at above link) then you can check your stats after a relativly short periods as they update the stats every 30 mins.

If you are not already registered for another project then you might want to do RC5-64 use the ta_seti@hotmail.com id.

Have fun!

Hey JWM and networkman, there are quite a few of us who are more than one dimensional when it comes to DC.
I do the genetic thing and seti myself, kind of a looking inward while looking outward deal you know.
I know of quite a few who crack and all that while they do seti or trade off or do one on a certain type machine / OS and another project on different hard/software.

You are right to bring it up for those who are stuck on only one project though, and I would hope those doing crack would also think about crunching a few seti WU's once in a while.

It is a team effort afterall, and you gotta admire how the seti side of this team is pulling together.
We just moved up a spot from 12th to 11th above Linux - we don't want to have Berkley come back online and find that Linux was better prepared than us and have to slowly pull ahead of them again!
We are sharing work units and (hopefully) contacting members to tell them how to get more units to crunch and chatting it up here and in the other parts of AnandTech forums.

It's been a really good warm and fuzzy kind of feeling being a little cog in this big wheel.

Well actually, Wiz, RC5 is a project that I've just recently been getting back into.. my main project has been SETI@Home, currently with 7,838 WUs completed! :Q :D

Yes networkman, I've seen you up ahead of me in the stats.:Q
I didn't mean to imply anything like you don't pull your weight or anything like that;)
I don't expect to ever catch up to your outstanding record:cool:

I just meant that although many of us do more than one project, most people have a favorite.
For those whose favorite is seti it's real nice how we are able to keep crunching through the outage due to the extra effort of a few very good people.

It also probably means that after the outage we might not have slipped back to 12th place again in the team rankings.

:( Couldn't get SetiQ working on the network, couldn't get SETI to accept the new WUs, didn't have much time to figure it all out. :( Assuming SETI is back, I'll start them up again Monday. All the lost CPU Cycles.... :(

Well not completely lost, I'm running RC5 on them for a friend until SETI is back up. ;)
