SETI slow the RC5??

heng1028

Golden Member
i am running SETI and RC5 in my system before that I run RC5 only and the cracking is around 2.03 mega keys /s
after i run SETI with RC5, it drops to 300something kilo keys/s
is that a normal sign or it is my computer problems??

They both compete for your cpu cycles. We need rc5 help a lot more than we need SETI help right now. Drop the SETI. 😉

we need Seti help more than RC5 so drop the RC5

HOWS THAT DENNI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ELITE!!!!!!!!!!!! HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA????????????????
WHAT KIND OF ELITENESS IS THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

let the man run what he wants to and just answer his questions.

heng1028;
seti is less kind than rc5 so it will use more cycles, what you are seeing (or getting) is normal for running both programs.
To help in both areas it is best to run seti as a screen saver and rc5 full time. this will allow rc5 to have more cycles when you are using your comp., and seti will use the majority when the screen saver takes over.
if you have a preference to one or the other or want more output in one contest or another then it would be best to run only one at a time.

the choice is yours, but either one, or both will be glad to have you.
also there are other contests going on check www.teamanandtech.com for more info.

i personnally hate screen saver.
i never have screen saver on my pc
i will switch off my monitor when i am not around for a long period

is there anyone can tell me the benefits of screen saver so that i can change my habit

Orange Kid,

You need to brush up your skill at noticing the wink icon. That might help you notice jokes, satire, sarcasm and the like more readily.

Dennil, our first majot flame war in here was over taking RC5 members for SETI, and vice versa. I think the prudint action would be to not try to even inadvertantly start that again.:Q

Joke or no joke most of us try to avoid anything that might sway a member away from doing one TA project in favor of another. This is to keep any tension from developing between the different contests. Even in jest your comment might convince someone to drop seti for RC5 which isn't what needs to be happening. I think Orange Kid gave a nice diplomatic answer to heng1028 that informed on what was going on without planting any seed of doubt about which project should be running on the system.🙂

The reason Orange Kid suggested running the seti screensaver is because that's really the only way rc5 and seti can coexist together on the same system. As was stated above if you run both projects at once seti will take over and rc5 won't get anything done. However if seti only runs part of the time (ex: as a screensaver) then the two of them can share the cpu cycles. When your using the computer you'd be cracking rc5. When you walk away and the screensaver started you'd be doing seti. When you come back the screensaver shuts off and rc5 would start cracking again. This way both projects get part of the cpu time instead of seti taking it all and rc5 not getting any cpu cycles.🙂

Ok. I shall refrain from making any allusion or joke about project switching in the future. I don't wish to create animosity within the team. For the record, AFAIK heng1028 was already running rc5 as part of my TA Cube herd.

heng1028, the seti screensaver can be run with no animation (blank screen) so all the cycles are used to crunch work units when you're away. When you use the computer (screen saver stops) the unused cycles go to RC5.
