Seti: rig offline for a while

I am sorry to report I have to take a 1.2ghz celeron off of the production line for a while. It's my sisters HP laptop computer, the backligting on the screen keeps on going out during use and it has been take back to Staples. I dont know how long it will be out but I hope it's not too long.

Allthough it is a instore warrenty. Staples replyed with "were not allowed to touch laptops". Then we were told to call tech support and they said to check and make sure the screen wasnt set to turn off after x ammount of time (nothning like being called stupid). And that wasnt the problem anyway, the backlighting flickers on and off while in use, probably a loose power connection. Nothing was accomplished and it is now back home and crunching. The next step is to call HP directly.

You should get them to update the cpu to a p4-2gh minimun for the trouble/loss of machine! 😉
Even if it's your sisters!

Paf

An idea, but I dont know if that would fit within limits of the PSU and the thermal envelope of the case. 😉 And I dont think the sdram would make it very happy. If it were mine I might hve them drop in a faster chip for $100. Too bad it only had S3 graphics, I want her to be able to play BF1942 with me.🙁

Assuming they follow the same rules as a desktop a Cel 1.2GHz is a Tualatin S370 ,max cpu is 1.4GHz

10-11hrs! ,is that with the GUI version? (should be much quicker than that)

Nope, it's the CLI version. Personaly I thought it was pertty good. It's not dedicated though so it is used while it crunches. It's not make or break but it does add a nice boost to little guys like me. My 1.2ghz Athlon only gets around 6.5hours. It's probably because of the insufficiant bandwidth provided by SDRAM.

1.2ghz Celeron 10-11 hours
1.2ghz Athlon 6-6.5 hours
400mhz Celeron 16-18 hours

I guess quite a bit of cpu power must go to other proggies then ,one of my crunchers is a Cel 1.1A@1.46GHz & does average WUs in just under 5.5hrs🙂.
Though it does have a FSB of 133MHz with RAM timings of CAS 2-2-2 ,Turbo ,4way interleave....... still gutted though it won't do 145MHz FSB cos I know the RAM will 😉

What's wrong with all of my rigs? My 1.2ghz Athlon will bearly do 6 flat with no background apps or use. The 1.2 celeron might do 10 flat with no use. What am I doing wrong? All CLI too.

Your 1.2GHz Athlon seems about right🙂 ,its just your Cel 1.2GHz that seems off ,how much of the cpu power is SETI getting on it?
Also having just a 100MHz FSB will be a bottleneck too

While in use the celeron is usualy set to low priority in seti Driver. When it isnt in use I try to remember to set it to normal priority. BTW does the priority really make any difference when seti is the only thing running?
If my Athlon used DDR it would probably take at least 1 hour off my time.

According to SetiWatch:
Celeron 1.2ghz: 60.019% | 87.9mflop | Expected total time: 12:52
Celeron 400mhz: 68.911% | 68.75mflop | Expected total time: 16:34
Athlon 1.2ghz: 50.555% | 158.48mflop | Expected total time: 7:12
remember, the times will drop towards the end of the WUs

Shouldnt the 1.2 celeron be atleast 3 times faster than the 400mhz?

What he said^ 😉

Also the 1.2GHz won't be 3x faster because the FSB is only 50% faster than the Cel 400.

But 11-12hrs/WU is still too slow ,it could be 1 of a few things or a combination of.

1.Some other program running in the background stealing cpu cycles.
2.A non Intel chipset giving less performance.
3.CAS3 RAM.
4.CPU not running at full speed due to some power saving feature(?)

Re point 1 ,what OS does it have?

WinXP.
If I look in the task manager it (seti) normaly gets close to 99% with everything else going to the task manager itself which isnt running all of the time.

I dunno if anyone has said this yet, but since it's a laptop, there may be some speed throttling going on.

You very well may be correct, but do the celerons do that? Anyway I will change it to always on/desktop now.
