SETI question on old processors

here's the deal, I have assimilated an old ibm aptiva, the max I can get outa an intel is a p166MMX(which I have, it won't go any higher, as I've tried a 200mmx and it will only support up to 166Mhz on the mobo) or an amd socket 7 chip(unknown ceiling, but I have one K6 233 that works in this mobo @233Mhz) Which would be faster the mmx166 or the 233K6? The K6 is obviosly faster in the OS, but I don't feel like waiting a few days on each for testing wu perfromance as both of them would take at least 48hrs per wu by my best estimates. was wondering if any of you have any of these systems and ave. wu times for me to compare.

btw the system has 80MB(2@16 & 2@32 of 72pin simms 60ns running win98se, also would win95b be faster as it is an upgrade copy of win98se, and win95b was the orignal os w/the system.

I can't remember if it was 3.03 or an earlier version of the client, but I had a K6 233 that did WUs on the GUI (yes, before I ever found TA 😉) in 36 hours.

Can't tell you about the P166MMX, however.

Confused

The K6 should do the WU faster than the Pentium 166. The larger CPU cache (IIRC) should help it work faster. It's been a while since I ran one (though I do have a K63-500 I should get crunching...)

I (had) a k6-2 500mhz PC running Win2KPro, 128M memory, and it did WUs in about 1 day, 16 hours, or about the same amout of time the Intel P133mhz running NT4.0 server did a WU.

I vote Pentium.. those K6's are awful at SETI. K6-2 550 running GUI at work did them in like 40 hours or so.. P2 400 running GUI does them in like 18 hours.

Yeah I reckon the Pentium MMX will be faster ,the K6's suck at SETI cos of there weak FPU.

I ran SETI on some Pentium MMXs & K6-2s with v3.03

With a Pentium 166MMX@188MHz (75MHz FSB),SDRAM ,TX chipset,L2 512Kb ,it was doing WUs in about 39hrs.
Pentium 233MMX@263MHz ,same specs as above ,30.5hrs/WU
My brothers old rig ,K6-2 375 (75MHz FSB),SDRAM,TX chipset,512Kb ,30hrs/WU

Interestingly the Pentium 166MMX was just as fast as an older Pentium 200 classic at SETI.

I think to be certain though you'll have to test them both
Check out the WU times at Teamanandtech.com too, in my lower sig link

As for OS ,how about using the Lite patch for Win98SE?, uses less RAM & HDD ,is more stable & needs less MHz than Win98SE too. Will run as well as Win95b on old rigs

how about using the Lite patch for Win98SE
Never heard of it. Since I have mixed ideas, I'll start with the k6 since it's already in and running atm, then will try the 166mmx in it, the system originally had a 166(non-mmx) and was doing wu's in about 54hrs.

I have a K6III-450 crunching on the side. It does one WU every 20 or so hours.... The operating system is WinME, and there is nothing else running in the system except Seti, so I'm thinking thats about all I'll ever get with it....

About once a week, I drop the entire Seti folder on a zip drive, and connect it to my regular system and dump and reload... Should've done this awhile back... heheh.. the extra WU's are nice.

🙂

thanks assim, it looked intruiging, I have it setup and seperated ie from the os, but I can't let it take me away from the single-click option though 🙂 maybe it will speed things up a little, so far the rig is at 15% and says eta of 2days 3hrs 14mins. usually at this point it's a few hours shorter so that would put it on par with the p166(non-mmx) speeds if that holds true, I'll let it finish the wu and compare it with the last angle range time with the old proc to see which is faster, afterwards I'll test out the mmx proc.

Keep us posted🙂

Slowest rig I have SETI on now is my mates server ,a PII 333@374 ,does WUs in 15hrs ,which isn't bad😉

I have a K6-3 500 running now doing about 1 WU every 32 hours. Just a mobo sitting on a desktop with 128MB RAM, a NIC, an 8.4GB HDD and Win98SE. Just for Seti. A few extra WU can hurt!

Sorry, It's a K6-3 at 450 MHz, and yes, it sucks at SETI 1 WU every 28 hours. I did assimilate another PC at work (with permission) a P4 1.6 w/256 PC800 RDRAM. I will have times on Monday. This will run SETI 24/7 until they hire a new salesperson.

That P4 will give ya a big boost😀

Btw I would of expected a K6-3 450 to do WUs in the mid 20hrs rather than the high 20s ,other stuff running?
