SETI P4 system still can't use onboard LAN! BIOS update resulted lower overclocking ability!

The driver for the onboard Intel Gigabit port reports it's working correctly but when I plugin the CAT 5 cable to my SMC 10/100 switch, the LED on the switch just flashes slowly. The others are steady. If I plugin a 10/100 network card & connect to the same switch port using the same wire, the LED is steady.

Does the onboard gigabit port requires a gigabit switch? Is the cable diffirent or is the onboard port dead?

Staying at 220 FSB trashed the XP Pro system file. Ended up reinstalling OS.

I am not sure about your board but on my 8rda+ to get the onboard lan feature to work correctly I had to enter in the mac address into an area of the bios.

I have an MSI 6758 P4 motherboard. I don't have the manual so I'm downloading it from MSI. I'll try another set of wire when I get back home tonight.

Hey IsOs....what are the specs of that new rig? :)

(Sorry, don't know the answer to your question...just curioius about the rig! :D)

No use repeating what I just wrote in that PM but I see in this thread you are using a MSI board. If downloading the latest drivers don't get the network port going I'd send it back. That may be the reason the board was a refurb? :Q

Of course if you have an extra network card and everything else works fine ... then just keep the board and use the other network card. The postage back will be about the same price as a network card so it would be a wash.

I just thought of one thing you could try. Startup in Safe Mode and remove the on-board Gigabit controller. With the correct driver at the ready, reboot and see if you can get it working. ;)

IsOs, If you haven't already tried it set the speed to 10 or 100 Mbps on the mobo as a test. The combo you have may have a problem negotiating a supported speed.

Nothing Fancy like yours, it's just a refurb MS 6578, Retail 2.4c & ordinary pair of Kingston PC3200 256x2. It didn't came with the manual & missing the back case mount. At default voltage, I cannot go higher than 220 FSB. Memory stop counting at 92MB if the FSB is at 225:eek: I had to get some sleep earlier so I just put a realtek network card. I've installed my usual SETI Driver setup and quite excited seeing two instance being process.

I'll check the suggestions above.

Does anyone knows if Windows XP Pro will complain if I keep changing the video card? I'll be testing AIW & Gainward cards and see which one is capable of high quality video recording.

Any rig is FANCY in my book! :D

Nice setup....I need more memory and a new video card now! :)

I'll try to look for that in the motherboard. I downloaded a PDF of the manual but I got errors on some of it's pages.

I updated the BIOS to the latest version 1.6. Unfortunately, the onboard network still doesn't connect. I connect it to the SMC switch, all I got is a flashing LED for the switch port.

Also, the update caused my system not to reach 220 FSB anymore. It trashed my XP Pro. I end up reinstalling the OS. Have any of you lost your XP Pro install due to overclocking instability? How did you recover? In my case it corrupts the file "system" inside system32\config.

At the moment the system is running at 210 FSB only:(

This is a SW setting in the LAN HW Properties.

If you are running WinXP, right mouse click on Local Area Connection in the Network Connections screen and select Properties.
Click Configure for the built-in LAN port near the top
Select the Advance tab at the top of that screen
Click on Media Type and select 10BaseT or 100BaseTX as the value

Good luck!

What Soni said! :p :D

Rule #1 of overclocking a nForce board (and any board for that matter): As soon as you have a stable system and before any overclocking run GHOST / CLONE. That puts you only 10 - 15 minutes away from getting back where you were when the OS gets corrupted. And remember if you are using Norton's GHOST (is there any other?) be sure to make the floppy boot disk (or a bootable CD) ... you'll need it.

Sorry for the lost OS. :(

I didn't follow the rules:eek: Me bad boy!:) ;) GHOSTing the drive is the best, but with 160 GB, it takes some time. And if you are like me, you'll likely to do it more than a dozen times:eek: I think it would be great if there's a way to GHOST this harddrive to multiple CDs or DVDs. Is that possible?

Anyway, I think it is easier to simply copy "system". It the only file that seems suseptible to data corruption in Windows XP Pro. Since I don't have any real data

To backup the files in Windows\system32\config, I boot up the computer using the CD, then choose R, to activate the repair console. I make a subdirectory called OldConfig and copy system into it. (I don't think it would hurt if you copy all of the files inside config. You have to do it one by one since the console copy command doesn't work with wildcards or directory copy.)

Then the next time Windows XP Pro complains about system being corrupted, I boot up with the CD and use console repair to copy system from OldConfig to Config.

Since I usually place my sah subdirectory inside system32, it would normally get lost if I do I reinstall of the OS. So if I had to reinstall, I now bootup first with repair and rename C:Windows to C:Windows2 before the actual reinstallation of XP Pro. I'm not sure if rename command in the console will allow me to simply rename C:\Windows\system32\sah to C:\sah. If it does, that would be better.

I hope someone else can benefit from this idea:)

Ghosting is really the best procedure, I was just trying to share my shortcuts;)

I haven't tried it, but it would really be neat if we can image a harddrive directly to multiple CDs or DVDs. Anyone know if it can be done?

Well at the moment it only produces 12 wus/day. A lot of the time it's either in the console recovery mode or in the BIOS experimenting with the settings.

I have placed it in a very cheap 10 bay medium tower case. When I loaded Norton Antivirus Professional, the system became unstable so I'm still in the experimenting stage:eek:

I haven't decided yet if I should flash the BIOS to the original version it came with. Since I flashed it with the latest version, I'm unable to run it with acceptable stability at the higher FSB.

I think I might have to remove the original thermal tape (or whatever you call that piece of AL with black stuff) and put Artic Silver instead. My temp is now over 62c with the case close:(
