seti on itanium

I wonder how seti would perform on an Itanium??

This site suggests that a port has been started. I don't know a whole bunch about CPU's so I can't really say if the Itanium would be any good at Seti.

I read the other day, though, that a special 320 CPU Itanium machine was made for NCSA. :Q:Q:Q:Q:Q

Even if it was slow, that'd put out a lot of WU's!

Speaking of WU's, i'd like to echo Engineer's sentiments and say we need.....

MORE!! MORE!!! MORE!!! MORE!!!!! 😀😀😀

An Itanium doesn't run 32-bit code by nature, but by legacy (Itanium is a 64-bit processor FYI). I'm guessing a single Itanium system would be very slow at crunching WU's, Pentium 1 slow.

Assuming that there is no problem coding for the Itanium, and that the SETI code itself is not too quirky to not take advantage of the Itanium, then given its massive caches, powerful FPU and solid memory interface, it should SCREAM at SETI.

I think I'll just go out tonight and pick up an Itanium server and test it out... 🙂

That's if you guys give me the cash! 😉
