units are good, even if the fleet has passed, new members are good to because they know people whose computers aren't doing anything for the TeAm.

i'd prefer if people post in a thread about this, so i can update the original list over in DC.

welcome to the team croton! we're always happy for new members!

just to clear up any confusion, a constant internet connection is not needed for any distributed computing project. seti@home needs to connect when a work unit is completed, to send in results and get a new unit. this happens about every 9 hours with a celeron 900. also, helper programs have been written that can cache work units for seti so that connecting happens whenever you please, say 4 am.

Just in case you haven't had a chance to look at the link ,a quick tip.

If you are running it as a screen saver go to ,diplay properties, screensaver, screensaver settings ,enable 'blank screen' & set it to less than 5mins .
Also , if you have at least 64Mb RAM & a PII system or faster then you can set SETI to 'always run' ,this won't hurt your useage ,except perhaps games where you should turn SETI off then anyway

BTW have you joined us?

Thanks for the suggestions, I already have my screen saver set to five minutes then the monitor turns off. I have a P3/866 with 512MB RAM (hey it was cheap! see my sig) so I doubt I'll have any performance hits so I have already set SETI to run all the time. IBhacknU's comment about running SETI on an old Mac at home gave me an idea. I have an old Performa 630CD (comparable to a 486) which does nothing, assuming I can find a NIC for it, I should install SETI on that and run it 24/7. How many work units would a 486 with 20MB RAM do compared to my P3/866 with 512MB RAM?

I already have my screen saver set to five minutes then the monitor turns off

If that's the 'shut off monitor' feature in the screensaver window ,then that won't shut off the SETI graphics & your'll get high WU times :(.If however it is the 'blank screen' setting within 'screensaver settings' then I'll shut up! ;)
So what WU times are you getting?

Oh yeah & you still didn't tell us if you've joined TA or not :p:)

As for the 486 doing SETI ,it would only be able to run the CLi version with just 20Mb of RAM ,& assuming you did run it ,it would have WU times into the several hundred hours range!:Q.
For a very old PC like that you'd be better off running RC5 on it & getting some worthwhile production ;)

Hope to see ya round the DC forum :)

Assimilator1 - When my screen saver is activated whether by 5 minutes of inactivity or by clicking the screen saver shortcut, the screen goes black and the SETI screen saver comes on and shows all the data, etc. After 10 or so minutes the monitor shuts itself off. After the monitor auto shuts off - but the PC and Internet connection remain on - it's still analysing WU's, right?

The monitor shutting off is OK, everything will work the same as if it's on.

BUT - having those nice graphics being displayed (which is still effectively going calcuation-wise even with monitor shut off) is costing you a lot of time/WU. If you run the GUI version which you currently are, you want to make sure to have it run in blank screen mode. You can still view the graphics occasionally if you want by double-clicking on the seti icon, but otherwise it will not display graphics.

You might want to check out this thread in DC regarding getting the best time with SETI.

Yo_Ma-Ma - Thanks, I didn't know that running the pretty graphics was costing me valuable WU's I'll turn that off right now. Wish I had my PC on 24/7 I'd prob find E.T. faster than just four hours a day.
