SETI@home-link up again, but remember power-outage 22.03 at 14 GMT.

When it comes to UPS, all their servers except the new BOINC-server that isn't currently space to in the server-closet was on UPS all the time, but automatic shutdown wasn't working correctly.

Not sure, but it can look like only SETI@home is using Cogent... Back in 2002 during all the bandwith-problems, SETI@home was for a short while paying 6000/month for 20 Mbit, this was much too expensive in the long-run. Cogent had an affordable solution, but could only hook-up in Palo Alto, 40 miles from Berkeley.

Can't really comment on any feedback from SETI@home when it comes to "classic" since don't really know when "classic" is having problems, but knows they've mentioned both the power-outages and cogent-link...

SETI@home for BOINC on the other hand seems to have good feedback.

Our Internet link through Cogent went down at around midnight UTC on March 18/19. This shut down our data service (upload/download). Cogent is still trying figure out what the problem is. We are also thinking about alternative ways to get the necessary bandwidth to the Internet.

I get a kick out of all of us "armchair" generals. Yeah, it's pretty dang easy to criticize from afar, and hindsight is 20/20. 🙂

I used to work for corporations were resources were plentiful, and millions of dollars are spent on infrastructure. Now that I am working for a non-profit that barely meets expenses, I've had to adjust to a different culture. Every dollar we spend on IT takes away from valuable services we provide our clients, so it's a challenge to provide quality, dependable IT services. You do the best you can with what you have available, and you get creative.

Thank goodness for Open Source and GPL. 😀

Well, I guess that makes me an armchair general then. 😀

But my problem this time is with the isp or whoever provides the link, who gets paid for the service the provide.

This is really starting to sound like a cut cable or something. I wonder if the connection was killed by construction or something... Router problems would be easy to fix and would be fixed in a day or two.

Doing a tracert to the first IP listed on that website Smoke listed:

traceroute: Warning: Multiple interfaces found; using 198.202.76.52 @ hme0
traceroute to 66.250.4.74 (66.250.4.74), 30 hops max, 40 byte packets

This is where it stops. Its weird. I am going to try and figure out where that router is located. The Ip of the last point to where you can tracert it to (66.28.6.6) is located in Torrance, CA according to (http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm?GetLocation) Almost 400 miles away from Berkeley.

Maybe they ought to get A O L ...

Sounds like A plan ... I think if they join they can have 80 hours free ...

Heh, that would be funny if SETI was able to utilize all of those retarded AOL CDs. It would piss AOL off though, they would lose their shirt on all of the bandwidth.

I am about 36 hours from being empty on my Q. Most of my clients have 99 Wu via setihide...... and then I'll be out.

🙁

There's an outage? 😕

The fun continues tomorrow:
March 18, 2005
The project will be down for 4 hours this coming Tuesday, March 22, starting at 14:00 UTC. Our building will be without power as campus tries to find the reason for the power losses we experienced a couple of weeks ago.

Uh Oh! Now the "cricket" page is dead.

I flushed almost 500 results overnight! I have priority set to flush first, then get WUs. Not sure how I the WU are doing.

Our Internet link through Cogent went down at around midnight UTC on March 18/19. It was repaired this evening, and the servers may be bogged down as they try to make up for lost time. We'll post more information once we're told what happened. Please note that we still plan to have an outage tomorrow morning (see message below).

True to their word, servers have been down for approximately one hour (so far) this morning.

(damn time zones!😉)

Hmm, "classic" shut down roughly 30 minutes before announced, and BOINC a little later...

If you don't know the announced shutdown-time, re-read this thread... 😉

The conversion between UTC and GMT is as follows:

(GMT-24)+24 = UTC
