How do some people get 20 years cpu time?

(obviously I am new to this, just started today, joined TA too 🙂

They have several computers crunching SETI with the same email identifier. The times of all the computers are added.

🙂 😀 😎 WELCOME TO THE TEAM !!! 😎 😀 🙂

Don't hesitate to ask if you encounter any configuration problem. 😉
What machine(s) do you have ?

another quick question, when is a connection to the internet required? because I only have 1 available line for the computer, and dont have a network set up 🙁

you only need an internet connection to send in the results when all the processing is done and to download a new work unit immediately after. for that computer its probably 3 or 4 times a day, a couple of minutes at a time depending on your internet connection.

Or, you could run a queuing program such as SETIQ, SETIDriver, or SETIHide. All these programs keep a bunch of work units on your computer, so you only need to connect once every day or two.

Also, what kind of work unit times are you getting with that computer? I'd guess they're pretty good. 🙂

Welcome! 😎

RC5 might be a better project for a laptop in use than SETI. If you run out of SETI WUs, which are also large, SETI just quits. But if you run out of RC5 WUs, it does random blocks which have about a 75% chance of being counted. Also, you can set RC5 up to connect whenever it detects a modem connection.

'Course if the laptops are stationary and can automatically connect to the net, SETI would do just fine. 🙂

Hi Dalfiuss,

Welcome to the team! If you are from Madison, WI...then my comment applies other wise skip the following...I worked on a project in Janesville in 96/97 and loved the area! Really enjoyed the bike trails.

That T-bird should kick some serious but, er, eh, Work Units! 🙂

Yup, im from Madison, WI

Well, I am gonna get about 9 hours I think on my first work unit, but i am sure it will drop to about 7 or 8 when Im not using my computer (I was playing deus ex for about an hour and was also surfing the web for about an hour)

The laptops are pretty weak, so I will be able to get them a connection whenever needed (one is 100MHz [hehe right now its running at 1 WU every 90 hours 🙂] the other is like 300Mhz)

This comp has the connection almost all the time so I dont have to worry about that.

Thanks for all the help!

Ah, a P75 would explain it, though it still seems like it's taking a little too long. My P133 takes 33 hours with the 2.04 GUI blanked...but a P75 is on a 50 MHz FSB, so that probably really hurts it.
