I'm using the optimized client linked to in the OP, and along with reducing the time it takes to crunch a WU drastically, my load temps are about 32 instead of 38. I'm not sure if thats because of weather, the thermal sensor being off today, or if it is actually caused by using the optimized client, but its nice none the less.

EDIT: no, I'm dumb. Temps are lower because I un-overclocked my comptuer. I forgot

Wow, that sound very good. I wonder how a Pentium M would do - with 2 MByes cache, running @ 2 GHz ... :)
I got to try that!

this client isn't making any errors in the processing? it's just faster?

Update on the use of optimized seti@home-BOINC-applications running on PCs:
I have now run all my BOINC-seti@Home -computers (Pentium, AMD) with optimized science applications (as mentioned in the first post) from November 18, 2005. I have today checked the my results (I have saved the files).
All WUs have been validated, accepted and no consistent computing errors have been made. I have had 4 computing errors since November 18 until yesterday (that was my "cut-off-date), and that is actually less than I had the 6 weeks before that (when 6 computing errors were registered).
Considering that I went from 127 K credits to 176 K credits (49 K credits = 1900 WUs) from October 1 to January 1, 2006, I think that this a sufficient base for saying that the optimized applications are doing very well. :)

Edit: spelling.

Bump to the front: TAS is running a BOINC-month and some crunchers are going to run Seti! Hooray! the team will benefit from it! :)

... and can't get it to work :(

BOINC just crashes.

I used both the client/app from marsian and cod3r.

Is it because all the optimized apps are version 4.11 and the current SETi app is 4.18? A simple rename won't do the trick for me.

Any ideas?

EDIT: It's for an Athlon X2 3800 with SSE3

How do you guys make the optimized app work?

Optimized cleint is no prob. But if I copy the 4.11 optimized app into the project folder, SETI just continues using the official 4.18 version.

HELP!

Christian, the otimized app is based on the standard v. 4.11. In the XML-file, which accompnies the app, the version is defined as 4.18. If it would not, then the seti-site would change/download the version 4.18 ... So you will not see any difference in the version numbers ... Please do not change that number in the XML-file since this will (probably) cause an download of the current standard version.

The important point is that you have to install not only the *.exe file but also the corresponding XML - file which was included in the ZIP-archive. Both the files are important and should be in the same directory.

I have had no problems (on 8 different comps, intel and amd) with the application ...

Oh well, never mind. I just checked the current times of my SETI WUs and that baby is just flying through them!:evil::beer:

Looks like it's working now!

Thx Peter!

There you see ... I saved the original app in a back-up directory. But I do not think that I will ever go back to the standard app - if I will find an optimized on! ;)

Shouldn't be. I used optimized versions for my machines too and they show the gfx just fine. You can only select the gfx for the current WU being processed though (in the versions I use at least. Not sure if that's the same for the original app since I didn't pay much attention to that part.)

And thanks for all the work you put into this research, petrusbroder!

Hmmm

I'm not so sure if I really run the optimized app now. My X2 3800+ (=2 GHz) needs between 50 and 60 minutes for a SETI WU.

And I can't get the gfx. It's just greyed out.
