Seti at School Help!

I am running SETI on a few computers at school, and was using the GUI for a while, untill I noticed some jerk thought Seti was 'pointless,' and decided to turn it off whenever he got the chance. So, I decided to just run the CLI virsion with SetiHide, so he wouldnt know it was running at all. Well, that worked for about a day, untill the computers got rebooted, and there was SetiHide, open and visible to all, even though it was set to run the manager hidden. Of course the jerk couldnt figure out how to turn it off, so he got the bright idea to delete the seti folder. Damn. Does anyone know of a program that actually hides itself, when turning on and off, through errors and generally not showing that it exists? That dosent have some really obvious name like 'seti' in the Task Manager? Thanks!

Do you have explicit permission to run SETI@Home on these computers ?

It would be unfortunate if the "stupid jerk" turned out to be the administrator in charge of those machines...

If however, you do have permission, you can set up setilog as a service and change the name of the executables to something more "hideable."

If you really have permission, I might be able to dig up the methods around here somewhere...

Actually, the stupid jerk is a kid in my class. I think he turns them off to piss me off. He is not anything close to an administrator. I do have permission, so can you tell me about those methods JHutch?

Until you get your info from Jhutch ,you could do this as a short term fix.

Rename the SETI folder to ,say plugins ,place it in the Microsoft Office folder ,rename the .exe to help.exe (or whatever you prefer)
In the shortcut (placed in the startup folder) add /h to the command line ,so you will end up with eg

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\plugins\help.exe" /h

The /h will hide the SETI client ,the only way then (that I know of) to view the WU progress is to use SETIspy (placed in the SETI directory,rename that too!)which you could launch from the directory.
Make sure you hide it only after you've setup the user on SETI!

Yes, im on the team. I would be doing better, if that kid didn't keep closing the client! Is there any way to have it start up automaticly when windows starts? Thanks!

Place in startup folder, or autoexec.bat
just use -h after the command in the shortcut...

Um, it dosent seem to be working. When I reboot, I get a flash of a DOS box for a few seconds, then its gone. When useing SetiSpy, the % done and CPU time don't change. Is this normal? Does SetiSpy only update those every once in a while? Thanks!

Yes it takes a while for it to update setispy....
Also, go to Start/Programs/Accessories/System tool/Resource Monitor and see if your CPU is at 100%
and please copy your exact shortcut link here.

The computer is using between 1% and 20%, so I don't think its running

and is it really in the Seti@home folder?

NO!!! Dangit, I guess I won't be running the 3.0 CLI on my computers (I need it hidden, especially with SETIQ running too.

SetiSpy will still hide v3.0 although you'll still have the setispy icon in the tray. You could always run trayer or hide it to hide the tray icon.

Or if you don't want to run SetiSpy you could always just use trayer or hide it to hide the client's dos box as well as the setiQ dos box.

You could use SetiDriver to hide the client and SetiDriver can hide it's self as well.

There are several other wu caching programs that can hide themselves and the client but since I've never used any of them I can't really tell you anything about them.

I made a small program that nobody seemed to be interested in called SETIidle which runs the Win32 command line interface versions at lowest possible priority. It also has the option of hiding SETI. The program is 36KB and will exit immediately after spawning SETI. Mail me if you're interested.

Thanks Riv, but I'm going to try HideIt when I switch over to the 3.0 CLI. I forgot I had the install file for HideIt on my computer, and I found it the other day.

There's also the SetiHide program. I haven't tried it myself (because it doesn't support Win2k) but it might be useful.

I'm thinking of making a service that would run SETI... It should be possible to manually make SETI a service now but by making a service that runs SETI one can include some nice features.
