Set up new P4 Prescott & POW!! What's this?

I was just in BIOS setup, everything going well (I thought) and the thing just shut down.
Now I try powering up, the green light is on on the mobo (ASUS P4P800E Deluxe) and when I hit the power switch I get a little bump on the cpu fan & that's it - nothing!
I was in POWER looking at the tems when it happened & the cpu was reading about 55C which I thought was a bit high but not so high as to blow up!
I just pulled the cpu & it looks OK - nothing "looks" blown on it.
Maybe a mobo component blew out?
Anyone got an idea?

:(:(

Try resetting the BIOS. You may have inadvertantly set something too high/fast, which is causing it to not power up?

Good luck.

trying the reset bios now, thought I'd scrape off the intel heat gunk & put on some AS3 first...

PSU is brand new Powmax 400 - but hey, I'll try anything!

Definitely look at the powmax it may have just been fualty....

Also do some research but there were reports of similar activity like this and they claimed it was a compatability thing. Did you have this flashed to the lastest available bios??? If not you may have to use an older cpu to flash it first then put te prescott back in...

Hopefully a reset will fix this but definitely make sure the bios is the latest and greatest...

THIS IS THE ONLY p4 i'VE GOT!

No joy with bios reset. This mobo is supposed to be "prescott ready".

I'll try removing the CMOS battery & reset bios & see if that does it, then it will be time to swap the PSU.

Powmax is kinda cheap, it's possible you got a dud.

Try the setup again, and if it boots/ Load bios defaults, then go download bios 1015 for the board, and flash it. Don't use bios 1016, as it isn't a good bios to OC with. Of course, it could be your PSU, but mine did the exact same thing, upon the initial boot of the cpu.

I can't get it to do anything remotely close to posting.
If I flip the power switch off at the back of the PSU & then flip it back on I get a green light on the mobo. Then hit the power button on the front of the case I get a small movement on the cpu fan and the psu fan, and that is all. I can reproduce these same results reliably over and over, but I get absolutely nothing more.

I could pull one out of a working system... If I could pry the kids off of one long enough!!

Wiz, I've got four motherboards with virtually identical symptoms. Three are AMD and one is a relatively new P4 of a friends. Get the green light, hit power, the cpu fan spins, no video, no beep, no BIOS screen.

nothing. I've reset bios like crazy, swapped CPU's, power supplies, etc. None of these boards "should" be bad, meaning "honest, Officer, I wasn't doing sh....t"

If someone fixes yours, maybe it will help me.

The P4C800-E Dlx has bios recovery if the machine fails to boot. It will return to defaults when it restarts. Sounds like one of two things, PSU or mother board. Hopefully your PSU swap will take care of it.

friggin Powmax PSU POS!!! :|:|:|

Got it from Newegg (whole order from them) so now I suppose I can send back the entire case or just buy a new PSU. They are a bit difficult with the RMA deal, it would be nice to just swap for a new PSU but that likely isn't going to happen - then the best I would have is another POS Powmax PSU :|

I have a friend who purchased a new case from Newegg and the PS ( a 400 watt Powmax) died in a week. I had him call them up and they replaced his PS with a new Allied 350 and he just had to send the old PS in to them.

So where do I find this 1015 bios?
I looked on the ASUS site for bios for this board "P4P800E Deluxe" & the numbers didn't look right.

IMHO you should get a very burly name-brand PSU and count your lucky stars that the cheese-O-matic PowMax didn't do something drastic to itself and the rest of your hardware... yet. :) Enermax 465-series or Antec TruePower480 come to mind, if you need ideas.

Right, got that figured out now - only remaining question is which is better? The Promise RAID or the Intel RAID on the P4P800E Deluxe? Sitting here ready to set up the RAID array, wondering which to go with...

I'd use the Intel RAID, because unlike the Promise controller, the Intel SATA controller isn't on the PCI bus. That means more PCI bus for the stuff that does have to use it, and possibly a little higher burst rate from your hard drives too.

Thanks MechBgon, that was my feeling too - just wondered if either was inherantly better than the other.
