Sesame Street (SA) to introduce HIV+ Muppet

I can see it now.

Bert = If he would have worn a condom while porking him/her (Mr HIV+) wouldn't be HIV+

Ernie = Yeah, thank god we use condoms. , Bert. (Wink)

Geez, you people...

#1 This topic is a repost. The parent thread is still on the first page

#2 It's in South Africa, not the US

#3 Some people who aren't gay or whores do get AIDS. Kids in South Africa either get it from birth or by being raped. Most Chinese cases come from unsanitary blood selling.

BDawg - Lear to read 🙂

"Schneider said talks are under way to introduce an HIV-positive character to U.S. viewers."

This is the most insane and rediculous thing i've ever heard (next to nick having a gay news show with Rosie). WTF is going through these peoples heads??? They are KIDS for christ sakes. They do NOT need to be learning about plague like diseases. I do NOT want my 5 year old son asking me what HIV is. They don't need to learn that sh!t till they are older.

Ugh, this world is way screwed up.

The article also says the original HIV puppet will "travel" to the other versions of Sesame Street so YES it very well may end up in the US, permanent or not.

I'm not sure whether this is a good or bad idea in the US, but in South Africa, where so many children have AIDS, I think it can only help. What we consider plagues and other adult-like troubles are daily realities for kids in other countries.

The problem stems that you are sitting there on an cartoon meant for kids of all ages teaching kids about something that parents might not want their kids to know at 3-5 yrs old. It is NOT up to the station to decide if they should explain and involve someone with HIV. Also you strike fear into kids that they might get this deadly disease. Life and death diseases shouldn't be discussed on childrens shows because the shows are there for fun and entertainment. It's wrong to force this stuff upon them at such an early age. If the parent feels the right to teach them this, that is absolutely fine. But for the produces of this TV show to do this sort of thing is wrong.

Kids are Kids. They should be left that way and allowed to grow up without having this crap implanted into their minds before they are mature enough to handle it. Their parents should be allowed to decide when this is talked about. Children's shows shouldn't be allowed to dictate when kids learn about these things.

<<Who are you to judge the programming of the show on another continent? >>

Are you talking to me? I'm not judging the "show" i'm judging the producers lack of intelligent thinking to realize kids don't need to be subjected to learning about AIDS and plague like disease at such an early age. Plus they are trying to bring this over to the US. Please read the article and the actual text before making remarks people.

My kid doesn't watch SS anyway. But i still think it's wrong to show kids that and discuss it.

I dont agree with it at all. I mean, these kids are far to young to understand, and as Murphy55d said, they are gonna start asking awkward questions.

I've got no objection to kids learning about it, but wait till they are old enough to understand, like when they are at high school.

First off, there are no definitive plans to bring it over here, so until thats decided it shouldnt even be part of this conversation.

Second, I dont understand why you are saying they dont need to be subjected to learning about it when 1 in 9 adults has it, 1 in 5 pregant women have it, and 1 million+ children in africa alone carry it. They can have the disease but its not OK to learn about it?

"First Off" We don't need you or anyone else dictating what we "should or shouldn't" talk about. This is off-topic. We're allowed to talk about whatever we feel.

"Secondly"

We should also teach them about smoking, cause 1-9 people smoke and can develop cancer from it.

We should also teach them about infidelity and divorce, cause 50% of all couples divorce.

We should also teach them about heat disease.

We should also teach them about Breast Cancer.

We should also teach them about alcoholism.

We should also teach them about drugs addiction.

I could go on and on.

I mean come on. Who the hell are they to judge what PARENTS should be teaching our children. If we had to teach children about everything bad that happens in this world, they'd be scared sh!tless.

Lucky, do you have kids???

I NEVER said it wasn't ok to learn about it. Seriously dude, READ my post before you spout off BS. I said they need to let the PARENTS decide what AGE the children are learning about it. Kids as young as 1-2 years old are watching SS. Kids of that age should NOT be learning about AIDS and HIV. They are not mature enough to understand the nature of this beast and to ask questions about it.

The should make the muppet a ninja....

It sneaks up on you and kills you.

And saying you have the ninja is much nicer then saying you have the hiv.

Hey Lucky, what happened to the PARENTS teaching them about the disease? Shouldnt that be what is happening?

Of course, in the context of Africa, where there's probably a huge portion of the child community carrying the virus if not manifesting symptoms, it's not only appropriate for kids to learn about HIV/AIDS, but also necessary. With the possible exceptions of drug addiction or alcoholism (assuming that "heat disease" means "heart disease", and not sunstroke/heatstroke) I'm guessing there aren't many African children suffering from those other things.

Again, in Africa, there's a very good chance that parents aren't going to be teaching their children this information because they themselves are ignorant of it. This may be just Third World stereotyping, but it's commonly cited that the reason HIV is such an epidemic there is due to ignorance on the part of the adult community with regard to STDs and safe sex techniques for preventing the same.

In an ideal world, I'd agree with that. In a world where kids are infected with life-threatening illnesses, they need to learn about it and grow up earlier than they should.

Hey Iamwiz... you know, if their parents have tought them, then where is the harm, and if they don't want them to learn... well, they don't HAVE to let them watch ss...

As a parent you can make that decision...

LOL, i meant Heart Disease. Sorry for the typo.

FeathersMcGraw - While you have a great point...

If the kids are wealthy enough to afford a TV and to be watching it (in africa) then they are most likely in school. It is the school system that needs to be talking about these things. If the epidemic is so bad there, then the goverment needs to allow schools to hand out brochure and to have someone come talk to a school (like US missionaries or whoever). If they have TV's then obviously they are not out in some hut without parents like the kids we see Sally Struthers Pimpin'. Their parents are present and they are the ones that need to be teaching this also.

Personally i don't care what they do in Africa, thats their own business. But when the Producers (who are americans) are already trying to bring this to the US, that represents a problem, atleast to me. Here, we teach our kids and shouldn't rely on TV to do so. Not all parents do this, but most do.

<<ell, they don't HAVE to let them watch ss...

As a parent you can make that decision... >>

How many African parents read CNN.com? How many people in Africa will know what PBS is doing? They are not allowing the parents to make the decision because a good majority of the parents probably won't know what they are doing till they actually watch the show. Plus some schools and other places show SS to the kids, which then the parent has no control over what they see. IT's just wrong to mix in life situation to a show being watched by kids under the age of XX years. It shouldn't be up to the producers for the kids to learn, it should be up to the parents.

The real problem - It's sad when parents even have to censor and watch "kids shows" because they are allowing homosexuality and HIV/AIDS. Teaching sexual choices and diseases isn't something that needs to be presented to 3-5yr olds. If you don't see a problem with that, you don't have kids or you're a crappy parent.

I do have kids and i take that as a MAJOR FSCKING INSULT...

They are allowing homosexuality?? are they?? it just shows your ignorance, MANY children in africa are BORN WITH HIV...

You state that the parents do not know about the show... well, as there are many mothers in africa who do not know anything about HIV either they need to be taught...

That is the MAJOR PROBLEM... they do NOT KNOW... education HELPS...

Maybe if you got some education about HIV you wouldn't lump together homosexuality and HIV so swiftly.... so GO GET EDUCATED!

They are many other flaws in your reasoning, but you are so dense you probably cannot take more info for now...

WOW, Next time ask for decaf.

See here is the problem i'm talking about. Parents are not EDUCATED enough to know that Rosie is doing a Nick news show for Pro - Homosexuality.

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=38&threadid=809792&highlight_key=y&keyword1=Nick

They ARE allowing Pro Homosexual shows on Nick. I'm not so sure that i'm the "one" that needs to get educated here.

You yourself lack from the obvious education that the rest of the parnets do. How are you supposed to know everythign that is going on around the world while working and taking care of your children?

So yo usay the parents don't know about HIV. Then why teach children? Do you not agree that the GOVERMENT needs to come into control and start supply brochures and ad's about HIV awarness? Teaching the kids directly is NOT the solution.

Sorry. I'm so "dense" that i just can't grasp the subject! It's hard to hold a conversion with people so "educated".

Damn the man, i suck 🙂
