Stupid people have way more kids than smart people. A normal middle class woman with a good family might have 1 child. A ghetto class woman will have 4 kids and the 4 fathers of those kids are in jail. 1/2 of parents in this example would be ghetto class, but 4/5 kids would say their dad is in jail. From that sample you would say it's "normal" for daddy to be in jail.

It doesn't matter. It only matters that little Billy is not ashamed that his parent is a loser :|.

I think what they're trying to convey is that little Billy shouldn't be ashame of himself because his parent is in jail. Loser? Not sure what the parent was incarcerated for...

yes that deserves a question mark... winners go to jail all the time?

I have banned sesame street in my house because honestly lets be real it doesn't teach anything anymore and is evolving more to become Real World: sesame street. We pull out old school politically incorrect sesame street on netflix from time to time but really TV is being used as a baby sitter in this country and its not cool

There's an argument out there by one African-American economist that pegs the breakdown of the black family to LBJ's Great Society welfare state. Made it easy for low income parents to get subsidies. Thus they tended to have more since it lessened the consequences. A lot of these boys grow up in crime ridden neighbourhoods with no strong, positive male role models. They never learn how to be a man, how to be responsible, or how to treat women. They get in with the gangs to fill in that gap and the cycle continues.

I think the problem started long before the War on Drugs. Goes beyond some bum selling a bit of weed. The war itself was a response to the crack epidemic of the 1980s. I don't see any government legalizing hard drugs like this anytime soon. So what do you do?

It seems like they are casting the whole situation in a bad light, as it should be. The idea of having a parent in jail being a bad thing at all might be a new idea for some kids. For some kids, daddy is a hero no matter what. If daddy's in jail, jail must be an ok place after all. Perhaps making it through a sentence in jail is even something to be proud of if daddy did it.

This will at least let them know that most of the world actually sees this as a tragic situation that it is possible to be ashamed of.

I'm sure it was something that he should be proud of :D

Could be a victim of the War on Drugs. Non-violent drug offenses? I wouldn't say proud, but definitely not ashamed.

Beleive it or not, many people have been proud of incarcerated family members in the past. I wonder how many people were jailed during the Revolutionary War? Should their friends and family been ashamed as well? Doubtful.

Like I said, context is what I need to feel comfortable with this.

Define winner. There's free people today who lie, cheat, and steal from others....you see what house they have, what car they drive, and what clothes they wear...I bet you consider them "winners".

It sucks for the kids since its not their fault, but on the other hand it does seem like a ghetto idea.

That pretty much sums it up. They do make a good point:

“There are several million children impacted by incarceration in this country,” Burton said. “No one is paying attention to them.”

I have a friend who grew up in this situation. Dad in jail, mom off on drug binges etc. He ended up growing up with his grandma, no one to turn to for help dealing with his situation. He's had a pretty good struggle since he was a kid because of that. I don't know if a TV show would have made any difference, but he was pretty much one of the only people I knew with a parent in jail and he didn't have a real strong support system.

Kind of stinks to have that hanging over your head growing up :(

I'm still more upset about Cookie Monster saying cookies are a "sometimes food" in the new version. He's not human, he's a cookie monster. It stands to reason that his species' diet consists entirely of cookies and that force feeding himself vegetables may have long term health consequences.

Yes, Crustulum monstri is an obligate cookievore.

That seems like a lot. :hmm:

Oh I get it. Poor families tend to be involved in more crime, but also tend to have more children. So the jailed dad could have like 10 kids to 3 different moms, and that will skew the numbers.

Yea, SagaLore. That does skew the numbers. Even if the dad has 10 kids with one mom, it's still 10 kids with a parent in jail.

Kinda surprised SS is still going. We watched it as kids because there was less competition, but I don't know how many kids still watch SS (?).

What about kids who's parents are prostitutes? Can we get a muppet to deal with parents who rape their children? This is important for Sesame Street. We need to have a muppet for all the bottom scum of society.

Maybe that's the reason snufflofagus sounds tired all the time. It's the anxiety drugs from his doctor to deal with his mom being a prostitute. Having a trunk is useful because the penis can go inside of it or the trunk can wrap around the penis.
