my jury duty started this week, and i'm on call for 5 days....please don't tell me that there's a possibility they'd call me in on thanksgiving! it would seem very unethical!

anybody that would happen to know if that's a possibility?

i'd actually get pissed if they ask me to come in on wednesday as well since i have an in-class project due that day!

Odds are they won't call you in Thursday or Friday, even, unless a lot of cases don't settle and they get way behind.

ah i wish...hehehe

on the summon it actually indicated that being a student is not an "excuse". but i still tried it by indicating i'm a full time student and they dismissed the excuse and gave me a court date starting monday this week. i didnt have to attend monday, but i called in today and they told me to come in tomorrow .... boo!

No court on Thanksgiving.

so assuming there's no jury duty on thanksgiving, but does that imply this week i'm only on call for 3 days and i have 2 remaining days to be on call for (thus sliding over thursday and friday to monday and tuesday for next week) ?

Good luck to you. I have it the week of Dec.13 . I see that they don't pay for the first day now. They are so wonderful.

lol, yeah i was on LA county court website, they pay starting second day...but i did notice they upped the "wage" from 5 to 15...or at least my friend's mom mentioned they only paid 5 bucks a day before. and they also pay you 43 cents a mile ...one way...

Every area is probably different, but unless you begin a case on Wednesday that doesn't complete, you are probably not going to have to serve or show up past Wednesday.

I doubt even the judges and lawyers know that at the moment. They are probably planning on having court if the scheduled case doesn't settle (and if they think the case could be concluded in one day), but between now and then anything could still happen. Most of the time they settle, so I'd say your chances are pretty good. I'd also prepare for the worst, however.

so when attending jury duty you only serve for one case? or do u have to go back for another case during the 5 day call-in?

uhm what's the difference ...well it said i'm summoned by the superior court of LA county for serve as a trial juror.

and i called in today and the automated machine told me to come in tomorrow at 8am.

but yeah...my question is if i would have to serve more than one case...i.e. if the case tomorrow is closed, and there's a new trial for a different case on wednesday would i still be held responsible to come in as a trial juror for that case as well?

on the summon it says, "Term of service: 5 days on call, 1 day or the length of a trial"

and it said i'm a trial juror at (location) during the week of: 11-22-2004, so i would assume that it would end on friday, and thursday and friday wouldn't be transferred over to next week just because they're holidays.

well when you're summoned for jury duty that doesn't mean you're actually serving on the case. it means that you'll go and sit around and they'll pick amongst those who were summoned to find 12 people who will then actually serve on the trial. and i think, though i may be wrong, that if you're summoned for jury duty for a case you don't just get transferred to another case, you're only responsible to the case you were brought in for. i'm not sure though if for smaller cases they streamline the process by just bringing in a whole bunch of people and then farming out to cases. i'd be highly surprised if you had to sit on more than one jury.

in CA you will only be on one case, if that. if you don't get picked to serve on a jury on the day you report, you're free for the next year.

<--just went to jury duty in Compton last month.

then i believe i'm so far just summoned, and they will ask us some questions after our orientation and whatnot and then tell us if we have to serve or not. i think i'm gonna play very biased when they ask me the questions and they will dismiss me.

so basically i'm still held responsible for at least one case huh...that sucks....although when i finally do serve, how long will they stop bugging me until they send me another jury duty?

yeah as long as you have strong opinions (it doesn't matter which way really) then you'll get cut. lawyers have two ways of striking you, striking for cause and preemptive strikes. striking for cause means you are not able to serve, for example you may be a felon or an illegal immigrant or something, but more likely if you're struck for cause it's because you couldn't follow the law as it is set out - for example in a death penalty case you have to be able to consider both life and death as possible punishments, if you believe you could not consider imposing the death penalty, you'll get struck for cause. Preemptive strikes means basically the lawyer can strike you for any reason at all, like he doesn't like the way you look (you're not allowed be struck on race, but considering how easy it is for lawyers to make up an excuse, it's hard to ensure that). Any number of jurors can be stricken for cause, but lawyers on each side only get a certain number of preemptive strikes. so rub a lawyer the wrong way and you'll be just fine.
