So I have an old laptop that I just replaced that was overheating, the USB ports were no longer working, and overall falling to pieces..and with the condition its in I wouldn't feel right to sell to someone I know.

I've come across a few sites like this one though: http://www.laptopheaven.com/ that basically promises to send me a shipment box, which I use to ship them the laptop, and they pay for it.

It sounds too simple to be true--and the quote they gave me is probably about fair for what it is..anyone ever try one of these services out?

I used one before. I believe it was cashforlaptops.com or something like that. They give you an online quote and send you a shipping box. You receive a check about a week after they receive your laptop.

Yup, they're twin sites..though laptopheaven quoted me $9 more for some reason, $229 vs $220.

I'll give it a try, thanks!

It's not breaking down the parts very well, it's offering less for an ultraportable than a regular laptop.

I got $300 for a broken down Thinkpad. It's pretty good if you have a laptop that isn't working well anymore.

Awesome! They'll pay me $600 for a MacBook Pro that's less than a year old! I can't wait for a net loss of $1400!

They're only offering me $135 for a fully working Thinkpad T42p with a 15" screen. What a rip!

they probably consider part demand/ease of fixing unit... ultra portables are more expensive to begin with, but perhaps they age poorly since they tend to be lower spec and less expandable and such. plus used market isn't the same as new.

Do they not take differing specs into account? They must ass-u-me you have the base model, because there's no way my laptop is only worth $220. I've got a still very respectable 2.26ghz Pentium-M, 2gb DDR2, Radeon X300 mobile and a dvdrw. Base models are a 1.4ghz P-M, 512mb ram, intel gma 900 and a dvd rom. Plus they lump my laptop in with the E1505 which can be equipped with Core Duo, X1300SE and the glossy Ultrabright screen.

They offered me only $30 less for a 5 year old thinkpad T40, compared to a 2 year old Dell e1405 (both were over $200, though, not sure why you were lowballed).

The motherboards on IBMs are worth more than the Dell's... Try looking at prices for the motherboard for the Dell and theIBM and it is much more expensive.

Like I said the laptop works only half the time and don't feel there's a big market for laptops that only are functional 50% of the time--so if a company is willing to take it in all the better.

$229 for a 3 year old laptop is not bad at all though, and it's simple.

Might be cheap to fix though ....
Perhaps the AC adaptor is dying and the battery is bad, thus it won't power on 50% of the time. If this is the case than a $20 power adaptor will resolve the problem.
