Service Pack 2

trying to down load and install sp2 and am getting this message,

can not copy the file agp440.sy_.

any idea why this is happening and how to remedy the problem?

I assume you are referring to Window XP service pack 2. If that is the case, you could have a bad download (if using Windows Update, try downloading directly from Microsoft or vice versa) but if you have Service Pack 1 I would just skip service pack 2 and download service pack 3 instead.

agp440.sy_ is an ancient AGP slot driver...

Can you choose to skip it during the install - or does it dead-end you?

I highly doubt you'll ever need that old dog!

nope didn't have sp1 installed thought it was on the xp cd i have guess not
installed sp1 but still the same message when installing sp2

When doing XP installs, the usual reasons for the inability to extract/copy files are:

1) Memory errors caused by bad memory or overclocking
2) CDROM or hard drive errors caused by bad controller/bad cables/bad drive
3) Bad CDROM

You could:
1) Run an overnight memory test
2) Run your hard drive maker's disk drive diagnostics

Excellent advice. If steps 1 and 2 don't get you there, then try copying your XP cd onto a new cdr (burn at low speed, no more than 16x). And if that doesn't get it, then try a new CD/DVD drive.
