Service Pack 1 for XP won't install on my system!

Help! Service Pack 1 for XP won't install on my system! I am using a legitimate multi user license of XP Pro at work and everytime I try to install SP1 for XP I get an error saying that the key for this installation is wrong or something like that. I called MS and after calling 20 different other numbers that MS said to call, I am still at the beginning. MS has no info, and basically all the numbers they gave me go to the anti-piracy hotline. They probably think I have an illegal copy or something. Anyone else come accross this problem? i would like to get SP1 installed but I really dont want to have to reinstall XP again which is what MS also suggested. Thanks.

Sounds like the cd-key that was used is one that has been blacklisted. There are programs out there that can change your cd-key without reinstalling.

If it is at work then let your support person at work handle it.

if the copy is owned by your employer , then don't THEY need to decide through their licensing whether they want to upgrade their software ? so you need to be authorized to do this by the license holder.

You more than likely have been blacklisted....I know one other legitimate owner that this has happened with....all it takes is one employee to copy the CD and tell his friends.

You can have your IT/Software License person call Microsoft and straighten it out

or like most do just download the pirated/hack version even though you 'own' the software.

It seems owning software is getting less and less a true ownership everyday. 🙁

Nice what almost $200 buys privately and I can only imagine what a corporate license runs.

There are ## CD Keys that were widely pirated that are blacklisted in the SP1 installer.

Whether you had valid media or not when you installed, if you used one of these widely distributed keys when you installed, your installation is indeed "blacklisted" for want of a better word.

If you do indeed have a legal CD key, boot to XP, insert the XP CD, and choose to do an "upgrade" install of WinXP to install the OS on top of itself, and this time enter the valid CD key. That should work.

if you have a corperate copy of xp pro, there is a key generation program that will generate unique keys for you. has worked multiple times for myself on multiple installs on multiple machines. these keys coupled with xp corp doen't require activation. quite usefully when you format often

Quite illegal too.

so is sniffing spray paint, but you don't see them requiring phone activation. *cough*

it's only illegal if it's used illegally. it would be quite funny for microsoft to serve someone and then that person have an actual lcensed copy.

remember, a license permits you to use the software (albeit on 1 machine), nothing about install that specific copy.
