I have a dual CPU capable server running NT 4.0. Right now it has one PIII 450, if I wanted to put in another what would I have to do? Could I just pop in the new CPU, or would I have to re-install windows? Also, do you think that going from 128MB RAM to say 256MB or more would be a better upgrade than a second CPU? The server is mainly a file and print server, that I also run programs off of from my other workstations.

TIA, Micron

It depend on the motherboard. What do you have? Most dual cpu motherboard that is based on BX chipset from Tyan and Epox are capable of accepting PIII up to 850. I have PIII 700 running on one of my Tyan D1833DL.

You might need to update your BIOS but your NT installation will not need a reinstallation.

You have to get an identical CPU, that code has to be the same. Then I think there's a 'patch' to up your NT4 install to SMP.

Although identical steppings for the two processors is generally
recommended, it is not required. All that is required is that
the processors be of the same speed.

There is (supposedly) a patch for NT4 that will allow you to
update the OS for SMP. I am not sure if the same is true for Win2000,
or if you would have to reinstall the OS under Win2000.
It is definitely true that in either case (NT4 or Win2000) the
OK kernel that is installed when the OS is initially placed on
the machine is different depending on whether a single or multiple
processors are detected. You cannot just place a second processor
on the board and continue to use the OS without any change. (Well,
unless you don't mind not using the second processor).
