i want to setup a CHEAP server on my home lan for ICS, file sharing , printer sharing and maybe some unreal, quake, etc.

what hardware would you recomend, to have a fast, stable and specialy cheap server?

cpu speed?
how much ram?
whitch video card?
hard drive?

my internet connection is an ISDN line with external serial modem.

also whitch OS win98se or win2000?

im not so experienced on win2000 so i was thinking on install win98se and remove all the unecesary parts with 98lite (active desktop, etc)

thanks in advance

first off how many users and what load will this server be taking? i have a p2 200 with 256 megs ram, running novell, on a 9 gig scsi drive, serving as web/email/file sharing for about 25 users, its a bit slow, but it does the job quite good. it has a crappy ass vid card, since novell is always on the command prompt, so no need for anything fancy.

as for our new server a win2k adv server p3 750 with 256 megs of ram, and 27 gig in 3 scsis. it works wonders, and it really is a high end server.

bottome line: how many users will you have? the load? honestly, if its only about 2-5 users, you could pretty much use a 100 mhz proc with 128-256 megs of ram. get yourself a 30 dollard vid card and a 14 in monitor and youre good to go. but remember bigger is better. specially if you want to run games.

i'll only have 2-4 clients at a time,
do i need a good video card-fast cpu, to run a Quakeiii or unreal tournament server?

to run a good game server for under 10 clients all you need is a 450mhz+ processor, 128MB+ RAM, and of course lots of bandwidth. Of course more CPU speed and RAM couldnt hurt. Unless you plan to play on the server (not recommended) then you be best off buying a cheap $15 video card and putting that money into RAM instead.
