I need a server for heavy database usage, and I'd like some opinions from people who arent trying to sell me something. ;-)

Actually I will be storing, retrieving, and deleting say 10 gigs of tif files a day, feeding and reading 10 files a second at 50k apiece all day.

Needs to be big fast, and most of all reliable.
We cannot have even one file corrupted.

Thoughts between a Win 2003 server and say a Dell PowerVault 770N NAS?

This is for my office at http://www.pfainc.com/welcome.html

Thanks in advance.

over my head but ill say you need to look at the fastest disk subsystem first worry about everything else later.

so you are saysing it will have continous send/receive of 5MB /sec???? i guess that's not so bad afteralll

I would just make sure you have a RAID array with atleast 1 hotspair, 2 if you're really paranoid, 1 or 2G of memory and maybe 512M or more cache on the RAID controller. I also wouldn't use Win2k3, but that's me.

And is that 5M/s each way or total both ways?

It is 5/M each way.
Win2k3 may not be great but I'd love to get something other than NT4.
