Alright, I am building a server and i have a few questions. if anyone can help me, i would really appreciate it.
1. In a server, if i were to get like a 1ghz machine, would that be enough, does that part really matter?
2. Obviously more RAM is better? how much to get?
3. Does the video card even matter? Could I use onboard video card from a motherboard?
4. Does the speed of the HD affect too much?
Thanks guys, i am looking forward to some good responses.
Oh..i'll be putting TFC, CS, and BF1942 on it. But they wont all run at the same time, all separate times. Do I need a seperate CD key for each? Like could I use my CDKEY for TFC and CS, or woudl I get that damn error from WON?
Basicially, is more CPU power needed or should i have more RAM?

You still need to give more info.

1) What OS will it be running?
2) Who will be connecting to it? And with what type of connection(s)?

For a dedicated server for those games 1GHz should be fine. And assuming either Win2K or WinXP you'll want 512MB of RAM. HD speed won't matter too much except when changing between levels a ATA66 drive would be fine. Video is irrelevant if this is a dedicated server, if it's a listen mode server then obviously more RAM (768) and little more CPU (1.4 maybe) and video will matter.

I will be using it for LAN events, and it will be running decidated server. It will be running on a 100mb line through a room. I don't know what OS i should use, any suggestions? XP, 2K, I will probabily run 1 gig of ram if its cheap, but not sure yet. Let me know guys...If anyone has one they wanna sell for cheap, let me know!

R u gonna be building this machine from scratch or do you have parts that you are going ot be putting into it? Are you just going to be using this as a local server or one to the outside? I thought you didn't need a cd key to run the server versions of CS and TFC?

If you are running dedicated servers the video card wont matter - onboard video on a mobo will be fine. Keep in mind if you did want to fire up a game like BF1942 to have a play it probably wont run on a onboard vid card.

1ghz of ram would be nice to be ready for future games, if you have the dough, but 512mb will be easily enough for TFC and CS... dont know about BF1942 though. Check some BF1942 web sites and see what the minimum requirements are for a server and try to find out what everyone else is running. I think for a big 32+ server it will require some very serious grunt.

Not sure about the speed of the HDD for a games server but a 7200rpm would be okay. A faster HDD would be nice but they start to get expensive.

You could run TFC and CS dedicated servers at the same time if you wanted. TFC and CS are just mods to half life so if you have a valid half life cd key it will be okay to use for both mods. If you are running the server on a lan I dont think it even tries to connect to the WON server anyway...

Linux is apparently the best for game servers.

right, i found out that there is a server version of CS and TFC. as for battlefield, i'll check around, but you think that PC133 would be ok? i have all but case, mobo, and cpu laying around. that is what i am getting suggestions on. it will be used for LAN only. i will use onboard videocard for the server as it wont matter. thanks and if anyone else has a suggestion or wants to sell me something, let me know!

PC133 will be fine if you have 512 MB of it.

Look at all the "$200 system" threads here for cheap AMD system ideas.

A cheap intel system would be Gigabyte i815ep chipset board from NewEgg + Celeron 1.0A - 1.3A. Note that i815e only accepts up to 512 MB RAM. I'm using one of these for my MP3 jukebox / software dev server.
