Hello all im new here, hope you can give me some info.
I got a college assignment where I have to build a server costing up to £2000 inc VAT( im in England btw) to run 10 cad workstations, the server can't be ready made like a dell/ compaq and such.
Am I right in thinking that it won't need to have much in the way of cpu power, just fast ethernet and quick hard drives in maybe raid 0 ?

<< how much is that in $? >>

It depends on what hardware you go with. Its expensive no matter what though. EDIT: doh, looks like you meant to convert it to USD. Sorry :p

i think its around 2800-300 US, so he should be able to get something pretty good. (all dollars will be US and rough estimates) Don't know if he needs a monitor, but get a 15 or 17 inch for about 100. Get a Tyan Tiger MP for 200. Two 1800 XPs for 400. Video card - something cheap for 50. memory - get 1 GB for 400. keyboard, mouse, and cd-rom - 100. Case 100

So that is 1150 so far, leaving about 1500 for storage. a Tekram controller will cost 200. he'll want 3 drives for RAID 5, so thats about 400 per drive. i don't think he can afford 15K drives, but he can get can a Atlas III 36 GB for 400.

he might want more memory. i guess you could go with 1600 XPs instead. Also, he might want MPs instead of XPs to stay on the safe side.

I would reccomend running Linux on it. I run Red Hat 7.2 on mine (Athlon MP, Tyan s2460). Use Samba to connect the workstations to file shares. You could even set it up a as Primary Domain Controller.
