Server Palomino vs. Desktop Palomino

If the server Palomino comes out in a couple of weeks, and the desktop Palomino comes out in a couple of months, what's to keep the hardcore computer enthusiasts from buying a server Palomino and running it at home?

This is probably equiv. to asking what stops people from buying Pentium Xeons instead of regular Pentiums, but in that case it's price.

Will the Palomino server chip be expensive enough to keep regular people from purchasing?

It will probably be more expensive than T-birds until they release the "desktop" chip, but I hope it's not too bad. From what I've read though, they won't be available in the highest speeds. I think 1.2 ghz will be the max, while a 1.4 ghz T-bird is coming out...

Sugadaddy's got it right, they'll be slightly more expensive then the desktop Palomino's and they'll be running at lower clock speeds. From what I've heard the highest clocked server Palomino upon release will be 1.2GHz.

nope, mobile/server/desktop are all the same thing.

It wouldn't make sense if the server and the mobile were the same thing. What would be the point of having them both?

That looks like a very poor PR stunt from AMD there ... .

Hmmm ... the question remains then. Why would anyone BOTHER buying Server/Workstation Palomino's if all the difference is &quot;they cost more&quot;? Someone must have made a silly thing there. Unless there's going to be versions for Servers/Workstations with more L2 or L3 cache (a la Xeon)?

Anyone any ideas? This seems to be quite a &quot;silly thing&quot; to me so far ... hmmm ... marketing/PR decisions - how often does one wonder what planet they live on?

The actually pricing will be the deciding factor. If these &quot;server&quot; components are competitively priced with what's already on the market ... and it matches/raises the performance bar, then folks will buy it. If it is priced much higher and the performance increase never materializes, it's life span will be significantly shorter.
