Server IP address. . . thing. . .

A friend is running a Minecraft server on a spare PC through his broadband connection. . . every so often his IP address gets reassigned by his ISP and we all lose touch until he realises and tells us.

I'm sure there used to be some kind of online service you could set up that would keep the IP address of a game server up to date automatically. . . I just can't remember what they were called, and I'm having no luck Googling it. Anyone remember what these darned things are called?

he could get a static ip address. otherwise i have no idea what you're talking about.

An IP that changes over time is a dynamic IP, if you want a static refrence to it then search for a dynamic dns service like posted above, or switch to a static IP which most ISPs support if you ask them (often with a nominal cost)

The free Dyndns is great. It was the only service supported by my modem but it works well so I'm not complaining 🙂
