Server harddrive configuration

Is this bananas (in a virtualized env. esxi)

1 TB samsung 850 pro
2 x 8GB spindle raid-1.
1 x 8GB backup

Thinking ill put
1. the database and disc intensive apps/vms on the SSD
2. non disc intensive on the raid-1 spindles(do I even want to raid them)
3. incremental backup of critical files(db files etc.) on 1 and 2 goes here(need to find software).

The backup drive would not be mounted unless backing up .. or maybe its smarter(!duh) with an external solution for that for easier swapping of drives and archiving...

What are you doing? 🙂.

You do seem to keep the important stuff on a single non raid 1 drive.
I don't think it's wise.
An additional 1TB SSD for raid 1 would have made life perfect.

I find a cheap NAS solution with 2 x as high capacity as the budget allows hdd's as the perfect backup device: easy to maintain(just swap the dead drive with a new one), not expensive, a lot of capacity for your $$ at your disposal.

Is this a real server like as in name brand rack mount? If so you should be getting drives certified for your platform/HBA card.

If this is a "server" for you to dink around on please disregard on continue the thread as is...
