Basically, my uncle does server leasing and so on. And told me he can offer dedicated server space for gaming.
Problem is, I dont actually know what kind of server I need for a 10-20+ man CSS server. I need to know the specifications and details of what I'd need.
For instance, server wise, whats the difference between one that can handle 20 men and one that can handle 10? What server technology wise is the difference between 100 tick and 66 tick?

Once I get the specifications or details I need.
I'm to email him and he'll take it from there.

If you guys could help me on these details, I'd much appreciate it!

Thanks!

In the past, while I used to rent cs 1.5 / cs 1.6 servers

It was a basic 1u rack p4 2.0ghz with 2-4gb of memory and they'll run 3-4 CS sessions out of it.. some people squeeze in more... xeons can handle more..

Dont know the specs for a CS:S but I figure with a dual core intel or amd, you can at least run 2-3 session out of it...

When you say sessions do you mean different ip's for gaming running?
So on one dedicated server unit, 3 different ip's for play?

Not necessarily different IPs, the port numbers would be different, but yes I think you got the point.

90% of it is the bandwidth, 10% is the actual hardware. the fatter the pipe the more hardware you will need. what kind of internet connection is he connecting into? you could run a 10-20man server on a old machine(a xp or probably even a p3) without any issues if you have enough bandwidth.

the amound of bandwidth will be the determining factor, then you could build your machines around them. being that you would want to get the most amount of server from the available rackspace, i would go something like a dc opteron 1xx, dc/dp opteron 2xx or c2d setup, ram will be determined by how many servers you are going to run on each box, smaller (the server software does not take up much space) 15k scsi/sas hdds in case a couple switch maps at the same time. it is pretty easy.

Very useful post. Thanks.

What kind of bandwidth is required?

I forgot, cs1.6 is been a while and yes as pushvtec said, its not different ip

default port for cs is 27015, hosting will charge +5 for that default option
so if you dont pay for +5, they'll use like 27016, 27017, 27018,

so basically you can scan through 1 ip and see how many game are on it..

I think for cs 1.5/1.6 it was 8k up/down stream per user.

found it..
http://www.cstrike-planet.com/tutorial/1

they called for 6k per user.. thats why running cs at home sucked, your upstream is slow.. plus you're so many hops away from each user.. latency will suck..
