Server disappeared from my network

I can still access it by typing "\\192.168.0.2" into the windows address bar though which is weird. Lucky a friend showed me that trick a few months ago.

Anyways its a linux mint 16 server, there are several samba shares, I cant see the server anymore from my windows 8.1 desktop or laptop, I need to type the IP in manually. My raspberry pi can see the shares just fine. Whats likely the problem here? Both windows and linux have received a bunch of updates recently, im guessing one of them maybe hosed something...

What do you mean by "see"?

If you mean browsing, and clicking on the server: make a shortcut. The browser will skip machines, or take minutes before displaying them, even on a 100% Windows network, with only a few PCs. That's just MS being MS...

If you mean that you can't access it by name, like "\\myserver\", then you need to look at your DNS settings on the server and elsewhere, as a start. FI: is the server wanting to use a different DNS server than your other PCs?

I guess the question is what do you mean by it "disappeared" and your windows 8 "cant see it"? How were you accessing it before that is no longer working? Typing the IP directly in the address bar confirms that it's still on your network and working. First things I would check would be if the windows box has Network Discovery turned off, the File and Printer sharing service is still running, and if there are any firewalls blocking things on either box.

I mean the icon disappeared, theres meant to be one here, at least its been there the past few months:

Although yeah the name "\\maxserver" works as well:

Everything is connecting through a single router, netgear WNDR3700. How do I make a shortcut to it? Oh wait just a normal shortcut and put \\maxserver as the location?? Wow that actually works! Okay Ill just use the shortcut in future then. Weird that the icon stopped displaying though.

Yup, and you should be able to add it to your favorites list in Explorer, too.

I don't know what causes that, but it's not uncommon in all-Windows workroups, so it may not be Samba/wins/nmbd at fault. I'm sure some update did it, but it's been an ongoing intermittent issue for several years, across different Windows versions.
