Server backup

Hey,

I'm currently looking for a good solution for automated server backups.

This is my situation: I have a server running Windows 2000 and 4 clients running Windows XP. All documents, music, movies, etc. are stored on this server. The risk is, if I have a hard drive failure everyone loses everything... dangerous, isn't it? :disgust:

I would like to backup these files when my workstation is idling, does anyone know good software for a job like this?

BTW: We're talking about 25 GB of date to backup. The critical files (personal documents) are about 100 MB.

This is for home or a small biz? If its your home stuff I'd just get another hard drive and use backup software to automate the copying. If its for a biz I'd go for tape backup so you can keep some copies off site just in case.

Windows 2000 has a Backup software you can run if you have a tape backup drive.

The software can be scheduled to run at certain times that you would see fit.

Another thing you might want to look at is a RAID 1 setup which has two mirrored hard disks. This way, if your HD poops out, you're still covered. However, this will not create backup copies of your work.

Thanks for answering!

I'm currently using the backup program provided with Windows XP. It appears to be all I need.

Take care,
Fox

Get some additional drives, and make it SCSI RAID-5. Lost drive? The only way you'd know would be to look at the physical drives, and see a yellow light. 🙂

RAID is a cool solution indeed, but a bit expensive for what I need. I would go with RAID, if I had the money. 🙁

Oh well; backup over network is currently running ... scheduled the critical files to be back upped every day, the large archive once a week. Works fine. 😀
