setting this up for a short duration so some people can all work on the same spreadsheet w/out all saving/emailing it to each other so i opted to put up a trial of win2k8server w/ a copy of excel 2k7 on it.

i have the admin acct and then 1 user acct for 3 people to use - again, this is extreme short time so they can get this done within the next month or 2. problem is, is when i have terminal services set to "allow only 1 connection per user", the user that is on gets booted whenever somebody else logs on. i could fix this by allowing multiple user connections, or give each a username/pass and all access to the file, but then when somebody is using the file, it gets opened in read only mode and this may cause a problem if somebody doesn't "get it" - these are not computer people.

why would, if i have 3 people using the same username, the first connection get kicked in favor of the 2nd? this to me makes no sense, imho, the 2nd user should get a message saying that the username is currently in use. did i miss something in the setup??? please assist

again, i know this is not the correct way to do things, but they just need to get this data done quickly and i thought this would be the fastest way....

Because the assumption is that you have 1 username per user so when a second instance connects the server assumes that user lost their connection somehow and reconnects them to the existing session.

Since two people can't have the same spreadsheet open r/w at the same time you're going to have to coordinate their time to work on it regardless.

i have found on another site i posted the question on i need sharepont services...i am d/l that but may just allow multiple connections and tell them that if a window pops up to hit cancel so they only have 1 person working on it at a time.

and i thought helping them out would be easy.....😱

If you need Excel functionality, you'll need to use sharepoint services. If it's not a complicated spreadsheet, you could use Google documents as well.

it is not a complicated spreadsheet and google docs/spreadsheets would suffice, but would rather keep this info on a private machine, no need for google to have the info.
