Server 2003 as workstation

Dragonbate

Senior member
I Just rrad an article about how to convert windows server 2003 to a workstation and was wondering if anyone has tried this and what thier experience has been and what, if any, advantages there are.
Thanks

Tons of threads on this same issue. Can be done sure but really why do it? There are no advantages in converting a server os into a workstation os.

Absolutely not true. They greatly improved the threading system under 2003 over xp. So if you do a lot of multitasking there is definitly some benefits. Id just use xp if you play a lot of games though.

Prolly why it seems to run faster on my P2 than XP does (no matter if people try to tell me it's just a placebo effect). I use it for more than Workstation use now.

That's why you do benchmarks. 😉

Seems counter-productive to spend that much money on an OS for such an old machine only to use it to serve the web and shit.

That's incorrect unless you're talking about 4-way+ systems (XP Pro supports up to 2-way).

I suppose if you have a 4-way system than server 2003 does offer the ability to use all of your processors; but that's extremly uncommon for a desktop.

Or perhaps you're thinking of the improvements in the kernel for virtual CPUs (Hyperthreading)? That advance was made after 2000 so XP already includes them.

Even *if* threading were better under server 2003 (see above post) it wouldnt make a noticable difference on your system.
