Serpentine belt on a 98 Ford Ranger....help.

Scarpozzi

Lifer
My friend asked me to swap out his serpentine belt because I have all the wrenches needed to do it. My only problem is that after looking at it, I can't figure out what is used for tension on the belt. There's usually a couple of bolts on either an idle wheel or the alternator for adjustment, but I can't find it. Does anyone have any ideas?

There should be a a tensiner that holds the belt. Start the truck up and look for it, it should move a little up and down as the car runs.

Now that you see it, turn car off, and usually the nut that is in the center of that pully or the nut that is holding the pulling to the motor is the one that. BUT on some there is NO nut BUT there may be a square slot, usually 3/8 size. Put a wrench in it and that does the same thing.

If still lost, take a pic and lets see what ya got 🙂

Also what motor 4, or 6?

Should have an auto tension pully that applies constant slack adjustment. It's there somewhere..as is in my 92 Dodge Dakota.

I think I located the tensioner...it's just in the middle of the mess and really hard to see/get to. I'm used to the tensioners that you have to adjust with a bolt....this one looks like there's no adjustment that can be made with a bolt... Anyhow, I was able to get the old belt off and I'm going to look at it again now that I can actually see down there. I also loosed the fan shroud to help with this.... Thanks.

Sounds like you are working on a 4.0L V6, it's easier to release the tensioner from underneath and have your friend take the belt off on top.

I'm done... It took me a little bit to figure out the tensioner system because there are two idler pullies. I pushed down on the new belt after I got it on and felt the tensioner give....it was all over after that. I had to use quite a bit of force to get the belt around the other idle wheel, but it slipped down half way and a couple of cranks of the starter got it on the rest of the way. I can now clean my apartment...if anyone wants to give me suggestions on how to do THAT task, I'm open to suggestions. 😀
