Seriously, Redhat 7.3 kicks ass.

I decided I'd swap out my old dual P3 board (intel 440BX chipset) for an AMD based single processor board. I shutdown win2k (dual boot win2k and redhat 7.3) swapped all the hardware, and tried to boot. GRUB (linux bootloader) came up and asked if I wanted to boot linux SMP linux uniprocessor, or win2k. Win2k fell flat on it's face, but I rebooted and tried linux multiporcessor and it worked fine. detected a new network card, the new USB controllers, and booted up right into KDE like usual.

Now: How do I reinstall win2k w/o killing my linux bootloader?

I don't know how to not install the 2k bootloater, but if you overwrite, it's easy to get GRUB back on there. Just boot from the linux cd, select upgrade, skip ahead to the configure bootloader part, and voila!

i dont know how to reinstall it. i had winxp running, and installed 7.3 on another hard drive.

the windows 2000 setup should detect empty partitions though for you to install on though...or even let you create a partition from free space.

you might have to also edit your /etc/grub.conf file if you run into some problems later with dual booting, if you didnt know that alraedy 🙂

I was dual booting before, it's jsut that the hardware change killed my Win2k installation, so I have to replace that. I know how to get grub working.

weird...I thought this was the earthquake thread...umm 7.3 sounds like a Richter scale number or something...but hurrahs for all the Linux people!

there are people in the for sale forums selling all version of linux for like $1.50 - $3.50shipped, check it out, they dont even make a profit, just selling the burning fee

here

I've had 7.3 sitting on my laptop for over 3 weeks waiting to be burned...I guess its time to get my lazy ass to upgrade from 7.2. 🙂

Should I get Redhat 7.3 or Mandrake 8.2?
Do any of these have USB support for my digital camera (DC4800) and printer Canon S600? How about SB live support?
Thanks.

The basics are pretty much alike if you take RedHat or Mandrake to learn it. Graphical interface with icons to click on 🙂
You can even choose for a Windows-like desktop if you prefer that.

If you want more indepth information on something all you have to do is to go to Google, and type '<name of whatever you want info on> HOWTO Linux', for example 'firewall HOWTO Linux', And loads of info will appear with step by step information on how to do it.

It will take some time to get to know all the details of Linux, but for basic use, it's pretty easy. they GUI's are similar to W2K (meaning icons, windows and such). But under the hood are some fundamental differences. For example, there are no "drive-letters". Everything is under one directory-tree, including CD-ROMs and the like.
