Seriously, is PC gaming on the verge of dying?

There hasnt been to many good games that came out this year. The Ea Sports game are pretty much remakes. I know for Nhl 06 they added back in the create a player, who knows why ea took out create a player in nhl 2005. I like to find a good game like command & conquer.

No, console gaming is on the verge of dying though, as video games are becoming more than a boys' hobby, instead getting mainstream with MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft. These titles are much better suited to PCs for many reasons. Buying a console now is like buying a beta VCR in 1980.

Seriously, if you think the genre is dying...play Quake 4, Fear, World of Warcraft, and of course Half Life 2 on a good PC, then get back to us.

This talk comes up everytime there are new console launches, then it slowly goes away - that's not taking anything away from the Xbox 360's of the world, it's a nice system...but it's no PC!

Exactly..I built my system for those exact reason..GAMING!!!

It doesn't matter if the games were poor in 2005 or good in 2004, all that matters is the understanding that if every single developer stopped making games for the pc in unison, all they would accomplish is a giant market gap that someone else would fill. Another thing that has to be understood is that a great many developers used to be or still are a part of the gaming community and there will always be more within the community. These people support the PC because it is how they got off the ground, it was their sandbox and it's where they enjoy playing games the most.

I
I read an article on gamershell, which you can read here, about the decline and it seems this is a pretty scary thing to me.

Thanks.

My read of that article is more like a slam against game dev's rather than PC gaming is dying.

While PC game sales may not be as much as consoles, IMHO noone's going to completely abandon a billion $ industry. If they do somebody will step in and profit.

Also consider that the sales figure quoted is for all consoles. But you can't play PS2 games on an XBox etc. So, seems wrong to me to frame it as a $6 billion vs $1 billion question. Due to fragemtation of the console market its going to be something less than $6 billion. (I just don't know, or really care for that matter, how much breaks out to PS2, XBox etc sales)

Not to mention that their numbers are clearly wrong ( if they estimate the entire pc game market at $1bn ) , given WoW alone has made at least 500 million in the last year.

Yep. They're actually discontinuing production of all PC games starting now. Better not buy a computer, it'll probably end up in a junkyard in a week or two.

I think this is the exact kind of idiocy the OP was trying to avoid.

Neither PC nor Console gameing is going anywhere, so make your gaming PC and be happy with it 🙂 There are too many people who game on PCs and too many people that game on consoles (or both for many of us). Of course, there will always be times when we are hard up for a new good game, but one will eventually come.

And yes WoW is addicting as hell, costs $13-15 a month, and I wish I had stock in blizzard... great game IMHO for the not so ultra hard core MMO players.

Lol, right. The OP was trying to fan an old flame war, no more & no less.

I actually wasnt trying to start anything at all. I have been out of the loop for 3 years and have no idea how the market is these days except for all these articles I read about how pc gaming is going down the crapper.

Thanks to everyone who had something legitimate to say. i appreciate it!

In my world, it was never born. A collossal waste of time and resources - but to each his or her own. 🙂

PC gaming wont die. Hopefully these stupid posts will.

They're cyclical, they'll die down in a year or so when the sh!tbox 360 looks like the crap it is vs. a decent PC and lay dormant for the next four years or so, only to be reborn when the next generation of consoles is released. I guess if you're a little kid and haven't seen this cycle in action before, and a year is "like, 4ever fr0m n0w", and are easily swayed by canned hype, it may actually seem like PC gaming is dying. Hilarious to hear it now though, with a genre virtually exclusive to PCs (MMORPGs) being the fastest growing segment of the gaming industry and attracting entirely new demographics.

Hm let's see.

AOE III
F.E.A.R
Quake 4
CIv 4
Prince of Persia: Two Thrones
Black and White 2
Need for speed most wanted
Call of duty 2
Psychonauts
etc

I don't see how it's dying. And most of the ones listed came out in the last quarter of 2005.
