Seriously guys, at what age are we gonna stop using AIM?

I'm 23 and I use it daily, all day. If I am away from my computer, an away message is up. When I am at my computer, Im active talking to people. My gf is 25 next month. She works full time, she's finished college at the graduate level, and she's the same way. All of my friends, my age, some older, they all do as well. Im sure many of you guys do too. In fact, Im gonna do a POLL.

When is it gonna stop? I mean, it started as a teenage thing to do and now companies worldwide use an instant messanger program to communicate to different divisions and departments in their companies and many correspond with other companies as well. But from a leisure perspective, do you think our generation will continue using it?

I leave it on all day via Trillian... frankly don't even know what the AWAY settings are like... I'm probably "online" all day, every day. I don't see this changing anytime, ever.

As long as I have internet I will always use it. Actually, when I'm not logged in at home, I'm usually logged in on my phone. I think it's essential, especially if you have friends from all over, great way to keep in touch and talk regularly.

Been using it since maybe 96. Dont plan on stopping anytime soon, its crazy how something so simple is such a part of almost EVERYONES life.

Should we also stop using the internet because we started using it in our teens?

IM is a valuable communication tool (though it certainly has its flaws). As for my use of the AIM network it's simply because the majority of the people I want to communicate with use it. IM isn't going anywhere, but I really don't care if AIM survives.

As for it starting as the "teenage thing to do" that's simply because our generation is the most technologically versed to date. We rapidly accept new technology & integrate it into our lives. Many of us now are reaching the business world, & IM is beginning to penetrate there as well. As our generation continues to age technology will almost certainly be adopted simultaneously across much wider demographics than it is today. We still have people in the workforce today who struggle with e-mail, until that changes the young people will be the ones using the technology.

Some day we will be the old people, hopefully we won't lose our ability to adapt.

what's so bad about instant messengers? It's the next logical step beyond e-mail. Now you can instantly message someone if they're around, or you can leave them a message. If they're not online at the time, you can just e-mail them.

Soon our lives will be completely digital. Everything will be done in a cubicle; you will sleep, eat, and work all in the same little box. Sex will be the only activity requiring a partner 😉

You're never going to stop. However, once everyone is comfortable using VoIP for casual chat, text instant messaging will only be used when it makes more sense than VoIP. The social networking sites will also get more interesting once VoIP is one of the default methods of contact.

seems I'm in the minority, but I've noticed a lot of my friends have deserted both ICQ and MSN. Back in HS, everyone used to be online, now only a portion is left. Of course, those of us that still use it, use it as we always have, its just that there's fewer of us.

VoIP will certainly replace our current phone technologies, but it will never be in competition with e-mail or IM. Try holding simultaneous (and private) conversations with 3-4 people, or looking up something that was said a week ago.

IM is a perfect hybrid of e-mail and voice, but the only important quality borrowed from voice is the instant nature. In every other way it is closer to e-mail.

Voice communication isn't going anywhere either, both serve their purposes.
