Who cares what he did in Africa?

It is vital, for two reasons.

First is the altruistic reason. Those with much have a moral obligation to help those with little or nothing. Add to it that those who are being helped would die without the help. You are literally saving lives. One of the highest forms of charity you can give is to aid those who can never repay you.

Second is a self serving reason. When a large number of parents die, the kids are left to fend for themselves. They grow up on the street learning that if they want anything they must take it. They also learn there is no hope for a better future and that no one cares. They then meet someone who points to a picture of the average American's lifestyle. They see us living in luxury compared the them...they watch even our poor throw away extra food. They are told that the reason their lives are so bad is that Americans are greedy and selfish and are hoarding all the wealth. A new generation of extremists who want us all dead is created.

If we can save the parents, the children will not end up on the streets. As they grow up, they see things improving, getting better. Hope for a better future is all around them. People with hope of a better future tend not to blow themselves up, killing many innocents as they do.

How so? Anything in specific that you believe was necessary?

Have you actually read, or at least skimmed, the Patriot Act? It did all kinds of things to enhance security against terrorism that had little to no effect on civil liberties. It was mainly the wiretapping portion of it that I objected to. I would have voted "no" on it for that reason alone, however.

I have read it, have you? I asked what in it was "mostly necessary". The only thing I can think of is inter agency cooperation improvements, and even that is more redundant than useful.

How about its refinements of pen registers? (being able to ask the phone company for phone records in an investigation basically) The old law made it very specific that it was only for telephone communications, and so it quite likely didn't apply to the internet. As communications shifted to IP networks, the law needed to be updated to reflect the internet as well.

I'm not a big fan of the PATRIOT act for the same reason as wolfe, but it definitely had things in it we needed to update.

It could have been updated under it's own, but no, I don't support it being broadened in the same bill that loosens restrictions on it's use by the fed.

Well you were asking for things in it that were necessary and I consider that one.

The funny thing about the Patriot Act was that at the time there was so much hysteria among the left. Many didn't even really know what was in it, only that it must be bad because it had the word patriot in it.

That's some fine trolling there, Lou.
