Although it hasn't happened yet, I'm not exactly happy with Comcast lately. No so much for service, but for other reasons that I'm sure you all are aware of so I don't need to get into...

Since I'm apparently one of the few people in this country to have more than one broadband option, I'm thinking that maybe it's time to vote with my wallet.
I happen to be 0.6 miles from a DSL switching station so I'm thinking that I should get pretty good DSL service at my place if I decide to switch.

Although I cannot bring myself to complain about the quality of Comcast's service...

That's nearly %50 higher than what my actual broadband plan is rated for and I really don't see DSL being comparable to that.

FWIW, I do use my internet quite a bit for gaming, netflix, and downloading... stuff.

The hardest thing with going from fibre (I'm guessing that's what you have?) to ADSL is the slower upload. With ADSL your upload will probably be 1mb. At less than a mile you should be able to get ADSL2, so probably like 12mbps down.

I was on 8/1 ADSL for the longest time till fibre came to town. It was fine for gaming and general browsing, but it kind of sucked when I wanted to do offsite backups or what not. Now with my 50/30 connection backups just fly.

I just have ordinary cable internet. Century Link has 10Mbps, 20Mbps and 40Mbps plans, but whether they perform as advertised is questionable.

Back in the day I could just do some wardriving and find and unsecured Century Link connection and test that out. But good luck finding an open wifi these days.

I know a few people who have the budget DSL plan which is 1.5mbps and they seem happy with it. But everyone else I know personally in my service area uses Comcast.

I checked to see if there are any speedtest databases available for review by zip code, and I didn't find anything of value.

Its ultimately up to you what speed and service you're looking for. Personally, DSL does not meet my needs. I also wouldn't expect much by way of quality customer service given to someone buying a slow DSL connection these days, your money is barely worth their time.

I had Centurylink DSL (When it was Qwest) in 05-08. When I first signed up, the fastest they offered was 1.5mbps vs. 3mbps that the cable company offered. Quite frankly, except for direct download speeds, it felt quicker than the 3mbps I had been using before. It was certainly more reliable. I eventually ended up at their 7mbps plan till I moved and was only close enough to qualify for the 1.5mbps plan again.

I am on the 60/4 plan with the cable company, but if CenturyLink ever offers a competively priced 20mbps or higher at my address, I will upgrade on the spot.

Turns out that Century Link only offers a max of 10Mbps DL speed in my area., but they do have a 30 day trial. I guess I could try that out and see how it goes. Not alot to lose by trying, I'll just enjoy having 2 broadband connections for awhile.

Granted I'm looking at %50+ drop in DL speeds so I guess I see how that translates in the real world.

With the 10Mbps DSL plan, you'll get 9 Mbps actual.
I have 20 Mbps, I get 18 Mbps.

I have considered switching from Comcast to CenturyLink on several occasions, mostly to save a little money. Going from 30mbps to 10mpbs download might be slightly annoying but manageable. The main reason I haven't switched (and probably won't ever) is because going from 8mpbs to 1mpbs (or less) upload would be too painful.
